Maypole Trailers: Your essential buying guide
Start with the typical load you need to carry, then check the trailer’s internal bed dimensions, maximum load rating and overall footprint. A trailer that is slightly larger than your regular load can be useful, but it still needs to suit your towing vehicle, storage space and manoeuvring needs.
That depends on the trailer’s weight rating and what you plan to tow. Unbraked trailers are generally simpler and lighter, while braked trailers are designed for heavier towing. Always check the trailer specification, your vehicle handbook and current UK towing rules before choosing.
A general-purpose utility trailer is often a practical choice for garden waste, timber, tools and home improvement materials. Look for a durable load bed, removable or drop-down sides if you need easier access, and a cover or cage if you want to help contain loose items.
Check the load capacity, bed size, wheel and tyre details, coupling compatibility, lighting board or built-in lights, suspension type and whether accessories such as ramps, covers or jockey wheels are included. Comparing the full specification helps avoid choosing on headline size alone.
No. Your vehicle must be suitable for towing and fitted with the correct tow bar and electrics. Check the vehicle’s towing limit, nose weight guidance and your driving licence entitlement, then match those details with the trailer and expected load.
Trailers vary widely in size, load capacity and intended use. The best choice is the one that matches your towing vehicle, the items you need to carry and how often you expect to use it.
For occasional household tasks, a compact general-purpose trailer may be enough for recycling runs, garden clearance or small DIY loads. For bulkier equipment, leisure gear or heavier materials, compare trailers with larger beds, stronger frames and suitable loading access.
Think about the shape of your loads as well as their weight. Long items may need an extended bed, while loose waste may be easier to manage with high sides, a mesh cage or a fitted cover.
Before shortlisting any trailer, confirm your vehicle’s towing capacity and tow bar compatibility. The trailer’s maximum authorised mass, expected load and nose weight should all be considered together.
Also check the coupling height, plug type and lighting requirements. If the trailer uses a different electrical connection from your vehicle, you may need a suitable adaptor or updated towing electrics.
Useful trailer features can include drop-down sides, tipping mechanisms, removable tailgates, ramps, tie-down points, jockey wheels and spare wheels. These details can make loading, securing and moving the trailer much easier.
Materials matter too. Galvanised steel, aluminium and treated timber components each affect durability, weight and maintenance needs. Compare the finish and construction alongside capacity rather than treating all similar-sized trailers as equivalent.
Measure where the trailer will be kept before buying, including space for the drawbar and room to manoeuvre. A folding or smaller trailer may be more practical if driveway, garage or side-access space is limited.
Consider security accessories such as hitch locks, wheel clamps and secure covers. These are especially useful if the trailer will be stored outside or left loaded between trips.
A safe towing setup may also involve tow bars, electrics, lighting, straps, ramps and maintenance parts. Comparing the trailer alongside the supporting equipment helps you understand the full cost and practicality of ownership.
If you are reviewing vehicle compatibility or looking for towing-related accessories, broader vehicle and parts categories can help you explore the surrounding items needed for a complete setup.
