Silva Torches: Your essential buying guide
For most households, a compact LED torch with a comfortable grip and easy-to-find on/off switch is a practical choice. Consider one for a drawer, cupboard or bedside table, and check whether it uses standard batteries or has a rechargeable design.
Rechargeable torches are useful if you expect regular use and want to avoid replacing batteries often. Battery-powered torches can be convenient for emergency kits because spare batteries are easy to store, but you should check them periodically to make sure they still work.
Brightness needs depend on the task. A lower-output torch can be enough for finding items indoors, while outdoor use, garages, sheds and night-time walking may benefit from a brighter beam and adjustable settings. Also consider beam distance and spread, not just brightness.
For outdoor tasks, look for a durable casing, grippy handle, water resistance, adjustable beam and multiple light modes. A wrist strap, belt clip or magnetic base can also be helpful depending on whether you need hands-free use.
LED torches are a popular option because they tend to be efficient, long-lasting and available in many compact designs. They are suitable for everything from occasional household use to more powerful torches for outdoor or workshop tasks.
The right torch depends on where it will be stored, how often it will be used and whether you need a focused beam, wide light or emergency backup. Use the points below to compare practical features before choosing.
For a drawer, cupboard or bedside table, a lightweight handheld torch is usually enough. If you need something for a garage, loft, shed or outdoor path, consider a sturdier design with a brighter beam and a more secure grip.
For DIY and maintenance tasks, look for torches that can stand upright, clip onto clothing or attach magnetically to a metal surface. These features can make it easier to work with both hands free.
Rechargeable torches are convenient for regular use, especially if they charge by USB or come with a charging dock. Check where the charging port is positioned and whether the torch has an indicator light so you can see when it needs charging.
Battery-powered torches can be a sensible backup for power cuts or emergency kits. If choosing one, note the battery size required and keep compatible spares somewhere easy to access.
A focused beam is useful for seeing further ahead, while a wider beam helps illuminate a room, work area or tent. Some torches let you adjust between spot and flood lighting, which can be handy if you use one torch for several situations.
Multiple light modes can add flexibility, such as low, high, flashing or eco settings. Think about whether you will actually use these modes, as a simple single-mode torch may be easier for occasional home use.
Small torches are easy to store in drawers, bags and car compartments, but may have smaller controls or shorter run times. Larger torches can feel more secure in the hand and may suit outdoor or work use better.
If the torch may be used outside, compare materials, water resistance and impact-resistant features. A textured grip, wrist strap or rubberised body can help when using it in wet or cold conditions.
A torch is most useful when everyone knows where to find it. Many homes keep one near the front door, in a kitchen drawer, by the fuse box or with other practical home accessories used for everyday tasks and emergencies.
If you are comparing torches as part of a wider home setup, it can be worth browsing related home accessories too, such as storage, hooks or practical household items that help keep essentials organised.
