Bookends: Your essential buying guide
For large hardbacks, cookbooks or art books, look for bookends with a broad base, good weight and a non-slip underside. Solid metal, stone, concrete or weighted resin designs usually offer more stability than lightweight decorative styles.
A pair is best for freestanding rows of books on a shelf, desk or mantel. A single bookend can work when the other side is supported by a wall, bookcase side panel or another sturdy object.
Metal bookends are slim and strong, wooden styles add warmth, and ceramic or sculptural resin designs work well as decorative accents. For extra support, prioritise heavier materials and a stable base over appearance alone.
Decorative bookends can be practical if they are heavy enough and shaped to keep books upright. Check that the decorative part does not make the base too narrow or top-heavy, especially if you plan to use them with taller books.
Measure the shelf depth and available width before comparing designs. Slim L-shaped bookends save space, while compact weighted styles can add character without taking over a bedside table, office desk or narrow bookcase.
Bookends are both practical shelf supports and small decorative accessories, so the best choice depends on the books you need to hold and where they will be displayed. Use ShopSmarty to compare shapes, finishes and styles across current offers from UK retailers.
Start with the size and weight of the books you want to organise. Paperbacks and notebooks may only need slim metal or wooden bookends, while hardbacks, textbooks and coffee table books need something sturdier.
A wide, flat base helps stop books from sliding, and heavier materials can give better support on open shelving. If the books are tall, choose bookends with enough height to keep the row upright rather than letting the top lean.
Bookends are often visible, so they can double as decorative accents. Minimal metal designs suit home offices and modern shelves, while natural wood, stone-effect or ceramic styles can soften living rooms and bedrooms.
For a curated shelf, look at the shape as well as the colour. Animal, geometric, globe, architectural and sculptural designs can create a focal point, whereas plain L-shaped bookends keep the attention on the books themselves.
Before choosing, measure the depth of the shelf, desk or mantel where the bookends will sit. Some decorative designs project forward, which may not suit narrow shelves or busy workspaces.
If the bookends will sit on a polished surface, look for designs with felt pads, rubber feet or a smooth underside to help reduce marks. On open shelving, consider how the pair will look from different angles.
Functional bookends are usually simple, compact and easy to tuck beneath the end books. Decorative bookends make more of a design statement but should still have enough weight and balance to do the job.
If you regularly add and remove books, a stable, easy-grip shape can be more convenient than a delicate ornament-style design. For display shelves, a more decorative pair can help tie books in with other home accessories.
In a home office, bookends can keep reference books, files and notebooks within reach. In a child’s room, rounded edges and sturdy construction may be more important than fragile decorative details.
For living rooms, hallway consoles and bedside tables, bookends can be used to display a small selection of favourite books rather than a full shelf. This makes finish, colour and silhouette especially important.
