Candy Ovens: Your essential buying guide
Most fitted kitchens use built-in or built-under ovens. Built-in ovens are usually installed at eye level in a tall housing unit, while built-under models sit below the worktop. Check your cabinet space, ventilation requirements and whether you need a single, double or compact oven before comparing models.
A fan oven circulates heat more evenly, which can help with consistent baking and cooking on multiple shelves. Conventional ovens use top and bottom heat and may suit traditional roasting or recipes that specify static heat. Many modern ovens include several cooking modes, so compare the functions you will actually use.
For smaller households or occasional cooking, a single oven may be enough. Larger households, batch cooks or keen bakers may prefer a higher-capacity single oven or a double oven with separate cavities. Look at usable shelf positions as well as litre capacity, as this affects how flexible the space feels.
Common cleaning features include catalytic liners, enamel interiors, steam-assisted cleaning and pyrolytic cleaning. Pyrolytic ovens use very high heat to reduce residue to ash, while catalytic liners help absorb grease during cooking. Consider how much maintenance you want to do and whether the cleaning mode fits your routine.
Electric ovens are common for built-in installations and often offer precise temperature control, fan cooking and varied programmes. Gas ovens can provide moist heat and may suit cooks who prefer traditional gas cooking, but installation depends on a suitable gas supply. Always check the fuel connection and fitting requirements for your kitchen.
Choosing an oven is about more than matching the space in your kitchen. The best fit depends on how you cook, how much capacity you need and which features will make everyday meals easier.
Single ovens are a practical choice for many kitchens, offering one main cavity for baking, roasting and grilling. They can be fitted in a tall unit or under a worktop, depending on the model and your kitchen layout.
Double ovens give you two cooking spaces, which is useful when preparing dishes at different temperatures. Compact ovens can work well where space is limited or as a secondary appliance alongside a main oven.
Before comparing oven features, measure the appliance housing and check the installation type. Built-in, built-under and compact ovens are not always interchangeable, so width, height, depth and ventilation space all matter.
Fuel type is just as important. Electric ovens may require the correct electrical connection, while gas ovens need a suitable gas supply and professional fitting. Always compare installation details before deciding.
Fan cooking is useful for even heat distribution, especially when using more than one shelf. Grill functions are handy for browning and finishing dishes, while defrost, pizza, dough proving or steam-assisted modes may suit more specific cooking styles.
If you regularly cook large meals, look for flexible shelf positions, clear controls and a door design that makes checking food easy. For baking, temperature accuracy and even heat are particularly important features to compare.
Cleaning features can make a big difference over time. Pyrolytic cleaning, catalytic liners and steam-clean programmes all aim to reduce manual scrubbing, but they work in different ways.
Also compare removable shelves, door glass access and interior coatings. A model that is easier to wipe down after everyday cooking may be more practical than one with features you rarely use.
An oven is often chosen alongside a separate hob or as part of a wider cooking arrangement. If you are planning a kitchen update, it can help to compare ovens with other cookers and oven-related appliances so the layout, controls and fuel choices work together.
Consider how the oven will sit within your broader home appliance set-up, including available space, energy use and how often you cook from scratch.
