ASUS Optical Drives: Your essential buying guide
Choose an internal optical drive if you have a desktop PC case with a suitable 5.25-inch bay and the right internal connections. Choose an external USB optical drive if you use a laptop, mini PC or desktop without a drive bay, or if you want something portable that can be shared between devices.
Match the drive to the discs you actually use. DVD writers are suitable for CDs and DVDs, while Blu-ray drives are needed for Blu-ray discs. Some drives read Blu-ray but only write CDs and DVDs, so check both read and write support before buying.
Write speed can matter if you burn discs regularly, but the benefit depends on the disc type and the blank media you use. For occasional software, music, photo or document discs, format compatibility is usually more important than chasing the highest quoted speed.
Most external optical drives connect by USB, but you should check the USB connector type, operating system compatibility and whether the drive needs one or two USB ports for power. Slim laptops with only USB-C may need a compatible USB-C model or an adaptor.
The drive must support the disc format, but playback can also depend on software, region settings and your computer’s hardware. For Blu-ray playback in particular, check that your system and chosen software are suitable before relying on the drive for films.
Optical drives are useful for installing older software, accessing archived files, burning discs and working with CD, DVD or Blu-ray media. The best choice depends on your device, the disc formats you need and whether portability matters.
External optical drives are the simplest option for many modern laptops and compact desktops because they connect over USB and can be stored away when not in use. They are also practical if several devices in your home or office need occasional disc access.
Internal optical drives suit desktop PC builds and upgrades where the case has a suitable front bay. They keep the desk clear and are a good fit if you regularly use discs on the same machine.
Not all optical drives handle the same media. A DVD writer is usually enough for CDs and DVDs, while Blu-ray support is needed for Blu-ray discs and higher-capacity optical storage.
Look carefully at read and write specifications. A drive may read a format without being able to write to it, which matters if you plan to create backup discs, media discs or archives.
External drives commonly use USB, so check whether your computer has USB-A or USB-C ports and whether an adaptor would be needed. If the drive is bus-powered, make sure your device can provide enough power through the connection.
Internal drives typically require the correct data and power connections inside the PC, as well as physical space in the case. Before comparing models, confirm your motherboard, power supply and case layout are suitable.
Quoted read and write speeds can help if you burn discs often, but real-world performance also depends on the disc media and the task. For occasional use, reliable format support and easy connection may be more valuable than maximum speed.
If the drive will sit on a desk, consider size, cable length and noise as part of everyday usability. Slim portable drives are convenient for storage, while larger internal drives can be neater in a permanent desktop setup.
Optical drives are useful for disc-based media and archives, but they often sit alongside other storage options rather than replacing them. If you are also expanding capacity or backing up larger files, it may be worth comparing optical drives alongside broader computer storage categories.
For a tidy setup, consider how often you need disc access, where the drive will be kept and whether your device has enough available ports for other peripherals.
