Petzl Climbing: Your essential buying guide
For indoor roped climbing, start by comparing a climbing harness, climbing shoes if available in your wider search, a belay device, locking carabiner, chalk and chalk bag. For bouldering, focus on chalk, a brush if needed, and crash pads for outdoor use. Always follow your climbing wall or instructor’s guidance before buying safety equipment.
Bouldering equipment is usually simpler, with chalk and crash pads being key for outdoor sessions. Sport climbing adds harnesses, ropes, quickdraws, belay devices, helmets and carabiners. Trad climbing requires additional removable protection such as cams, wedges, hexes, slings and appropriate racking hardware.
Check the item’s intended climbing use, size or fit, compatibility with your existing kit, materials, gate or locking mechanism where relevant, rope diameter range for belay devices, and any certification information shown by the seller or manufacturer. Avoid buying safety-critical kit if its history, condition or suitability is unclear.
Ice axes, crampons, ice screws and other winter climbing items are designed for ice, snow or alpine conditions rather than general indoor or dry rock climbing. Compare them only if your route, training and conditions specifically require winter equipment, and make sure they match your boots, gloves, rope system and experience level.
Use price and sale filters alongside practical checks such as activity type, fit, size, rating, rope compatibility, weight, durability and whether the item suits your current skill level. With climbing gear, the cheapest option is not always the right option, especially for protective equipment or items used in a belay system.
Climbing equipment varies widely by discipline, so it helps to compare products by how and where you climb rather than by price alone. Use this guide to narrow down the main categories across Sports > Climbing and choose kit that suits your route type, experience and existing setup.
For indoor top roping or sport climbing, the essentials usually centre on a well-fitting harness, suitable rope, belay device, locking carabiners, helmet and chalk. If you climb lead routes, quickdraws and additional carabiners may become important depending on the venue or route.
When comparing these items, check sizing, comfort, rope diameter compatibility, locking style, weight and how the item will work with the rest of your kit. A harness that fits well and a belay device that suits your rope are more useful than simply choosing the lowest sale price.
Bouldering shoppers often focus on movement, landing protection and grip management. Crash pads are useful for outdoor bouldering, while chalk and chalk bags help manage hand moisture during repeated attempts.
For strength and technique work away from the crag, climbing holds and hangboards can support home or wall-based training. Compare mounting requirements, hold types, grip difficulty and whether the product suits your current strength level.
Trad climbing and longer routes can require removable protection and a more organised rack. Cams, wedges, hexes, slings, cords, daisy chains and pulleys each serve different purposes, so compare by route style, placement options and compatibility with your carabiners and anchors.
Look closely at size ranges, colour coding, sling length, strength ratings displayed by the manufacturer, and whether the product is intended for protection, aid, hauling or anchor building. Avoid mixing unfamiliar components without proper training.
Winter climbing equipment is highly specialised. Ice axes, crampons, ice screws and related ice and snow climbing gear should be compared with your route conditions, boot compatibility, glove use and technical ability in mind.
Check whether crampons match your boot type, whether ice tools or axes suit walking, mountaineering or technical climbing, and whether screws are appropriate for the ice you expect to encounter. This is an area where training and correct matching matter as much as finding a sale.
Climbing products are often designed to work as part of a system. A rope must suit the belay device, carabiners must suit the way they are clipped or locked, and harnesses must fit securely over the clothing you climb in.
Before purchasing, compare the manufacturer’s intended use, sizing information, material details and any compatibility notes shown. If a product forms part of your safety system, buy only when you are confident it is appropriate for your climbing discipline and you know how to use it correctly.
