PortwestPortwest Work Trousers: Your essential buying guide
Focus on durability, comfort and the tasks you do most often. Reinforced knees, ripstop or heavyweight fabrics, stretch panels, secure pockets and tool loops can all make a difference for trade and site work. If you kneel regularly, choose trousers with knee pad pockets that match your preferred pad type.
Yes, if your work involves kneeling for fitting, flooring, plumbing, electrical work or general maintenance. Knee pad pockets help keep pads positioned while you move, offering extra protection without needing separate strap-on pads. Check whether the pockets load from the top or bottom and whether they are adjustable.
The best fabric depends on your working conditions. Cotton-rich blends can feel comfortable and breathable, polyester blends often add durability and quicker drying, while stretch fabrics improve movement. For rougher jobs, look for reinforced panels or ripstop construction in high-wear areas.
Work trousers should allow easy movement without being so loose that they snag or get in the way. A regular or relaxed fit is useful for bending and kneeling, while stretch fabrics can make a slimmer fit more practical. Always consider whether you will wear base layers or knee pads with them.
You may need hi-vis or safety-rated trousers if your workplace requires specific protective clothing, especially around vehicles, roads, warehouses or low-light environments. Always follow your employer’s PPE guidance and check product specifications for any stated standards before buying.
Work trousers need to balance toughness, comfort and storage. The right pair should suit your trade, movement and working environment rather than simply looking durable.
For general trade work, cargo-style trousers with multiple pockets are a practical choice for carrying small tools, fixings and personal items. If you spend time on your knees, prioritise reinforced knee zones and knee pad pockets.
For outdoor jobs, consider fabric weight, weather resistance and how quickly the trousers dry. For indoor or warmer environments, lighter materials and breathable blends can help keep you comfortable through the day.
Pocket design can affect how useful work trousers feel on the job. Look for holster pockets, ruler pockets, cargo pockets, phone compartments and hammer loops if you regularly carry tools or fittings.
Think about which side you naturally reach for and whether pockets will remain accessible when wearing a tool belt or jacket. Secure fastenings can also help protect smaller items while climbing, crouching or moving around site.
High-wear areas such as knees, hems, seat and pocket edges often benefit from extra reinforcement. Tougher fabrics may last longer in abrasive environments, while triple stitching or reinforced seams can add strength where trousers are under strain.
If your work involves kneeling on rough surfaces, carrying materials or brushing against brick, timber or metal, durability features are worth prioritising over fashion-led styling.
A good fit should support bending, lifting, climbing and crouching. Stretch panels, gusseted crotches and articulated knees can improve mobility without needing to size up too far.
Check waist and leg measurements carefully, especially if you wear work boots, knee pads or base layers. Some work trousers are available in different leg lengths, which can help avoid excess fabric around the ankle.
Some workplaces specify particular colours, hi-vis details, flame-resistant fabrics or other PPE requirements. Before comparing styles, confirm whether your role or site rules require a specific type of work trouser.
If trousers form part of a wider workwear setup, it can be useful to compare them alongside other workwear so fabrics, fit and practical features work well together.
