AEG Washing Machines: Your essential buying guide
For one or two people, a smaller drum can be enough for regular loads, while families or households washing bedding and towels often benefit from a larger capacity. Choose a drum size that matches your usual laundry volume rather than only the biggest option available.
A washer dryer can be useful if you are short on space or do not want two separate appliances. However, drying capacities are often lower than washing capacities, so it is worth checking both figures if you plan to dry full loads regularly.
Useful features to compare include quick wash programmes, eco settings, variable spin speeds, delay start, anti-allergy cycles, wool or hand-wash settings and smart controls. The best mix depends on your fabrics, schedule and how much control you want over each wash.
Spin speed affects how much water is removed at the end of a cycle. A higher spin speed can help clothes dry more quickly, but delicate fabrics may need gentler settings, so look for a machine with adjustable spin options.
Measure the available width, height and depth carefully, including space for hoses and the door to open. If floor space is limited, you may also want to compare washer dryer models or slim-depth designs where available.
Choosing a washing machine is about matching capacity, programmes and practical features to the way your household handles laundry. Use the sections below to focus on the details that make the biggest difference day to day.
Drum capacity is one of the first things to compare. Smaller households may not need a large drum, while families, shared homes and anyone washing bulky bedding may find extra capacity more convenient.
A bigger drum is only useful if you fill it often enough. If you usually wash small loads, a medium-capacity machine with flexible programmes may be a better match.
Look beyond the number of programmes and focus on the cycles that fit your routine. Quick washes can help with lightly worn clothes, while cotton, synthetic, wool, sportswear and delicate settings give you more control over different fabrics.
Eco modes, temperature choices and load-sensing features can also be useful if you want a machine that adapts to varied laundry loads.
If you do not have room for a separate tumble dryer, a washer dryer washing machine may be worth comparing alongside standard washing machines. It combines washing and drying in one appliance, which can be helpful in smaller homes.
Check the washing and drying capacities separately, as the drying load is usually smaller. This matters if you want to dry large loads without splitting them.
Spin speed can affect how damp laundry feels when the cycle finishes. If clothes often go on an airer, a strong spin setting may help reduce drying time, while adjustable speeds are useful for delicate items.
Noise level is worth considering if the machine will be near living spaces, bedrooms or an open-plan kitchen. Also check dimensions, door opening direction and whether the machine suits your plumbing and available space.
Delay start, remaining-time displays, child locks, pause-and-add functions and app controls can make laundry easier to manage. These extras are most valuable when they support how and when you prefer to wash.
Before choosing, compare the essentials first: capacity, dimensions, energy rating, cycle choice and whether you need drying built in. That will help you avoid paying attention to features you are unlikely to use.
