Makita Upright Vacuum: Your essential buying guide
Consider the floor types in your home, the weight of the vacuum, dust bin or bag capacity, filtration, cord length or battery runtime, and whether it has tools for stairs, edges and upholstery. If you have pets, look for models designed to help lift hair from carpets and soft furnishings.
Many upright vacuums are well suited to carpets because their floorheads often include rotating brush bars. For hard floors, check whether the brush bar can be switched off or adjusted, and whether the floorhead is designed to avoid scattering debris or scratching delicate surfaces.
Corded upright vacuums are useful for longer cleaning sessions without stopping to recharge, while cordless uprights offer easier movement between rooms and around furniture. Compare runtime, charging time, suction settings and overall weight if you are considering a cordless model.
Some upright vacuum cleaners are designed with pet hair in mind, often using powered brush bars, tangle-reducing floorheads or specialist mini tools. Check the included accessories and filtration details, especially if pet hair gathers on stairs, sofas or rugs.
Weight matters if you need to carry the vacuum upstairs, clean multiple floors or manoeuvre around furniture. A heavier upright may feel sturdy on carpets, but a lighter model can be easier to handle for quick cleans and everyday use.
Upright vacuum cleaners are designed for practical floor cleaning, especially in homes with larger carpeted areas or mixed flooring. Comparing the right features can help you find a model that suits your layout, storage space and cleaning routine.
Start with the surfaces you clean most often. Carpeted rooms usually benefit from an effective brush bar, while homes with hard floors need a floorhead that can handle dust and larger debris without scattering.
If your home has rugs, laminate, tiles and carpets, look for adjustable suction or floor settings. This helps you move between surfaces without needing a separate appliance for each room.
A corded upright can be a good fit if you prefer uninterrupted cleaning and do not want to plan around charging. Check the cable length and how easily the vacuum reaches from room to room.
Cordless upright vacuums are convenient where flexibility matters, particularly in homes with awkward corners or limited sockets. Compare runtime on different power modes, charging time and whether the battery is removable.
Upright vacuums vary in how heavy and bulky they feel. If you carry your vacuum upstairs or store it in a cupboard, check the weight, handle design and overall footprint before deciding.
Dust capacity is also important. A larger bin or bag may need emptying less often, while a smaller design can be easier to store and handle.
Useful attachments can make an upright vacuum more versatile. Crevice tools, dusting brushes and mini motorised tools can help with skirting boards, stairs, upholstery and pet hair.
Filtration is worth comparing if fine dust, pollen or pet dander are concerns in your home. Check whether filters are washable or replaceable, and how easy the dust container or bag is to empty cleanly.
An upright vacuum is not the only option. Cylinder vacuum cleaners can be easier to pull around furniture, handheld models are useful for quick spot cleaning, and carpet cleaners are designed for washing carpets rather than everyday dry vacuuming.
If you are still deciding which style suits your home, comparing the wider vacuum cleaner category can help you understand the trade-offs before focusing on an upright model.
