Philips TVs: Your essential buying guide
Choose a screen size that suits the room and your viewing distance. Smaller TVs can work well in bedrooms, kitchens and studies, while larger screens are better suited to living rooms where you can sit further back. Also check the width of the TV and stand, not just the diagonal screen size.
A 4K TV is a sensible choice for many shoppers because it gives you more detail than Full HD when watching compatible films, TV, sport and streaming content. It is especially useful on medium and large screens, where picture detail is easier to notice.
LED TVs are widely available and cover a broad range of prices and sizes. QLED TVs use quantum dot technology to enhance colour and brightness. OLED TVs use self-lit pixels, which can help with contrast and deep blacks. The best choice depends on your room, budget and what you watch most.
For gaming, look at refresh rate, input lag information where available, HDMI 2.1 support for newer consoles, variable refresh rate features and game mode settings. Screen size and picture quality matter too, especially if you use the TV for both gaming and films.
A smart TV is useful if you want built-in access to streaming apps and online services without adding a separate media player. Before buying, check that the TV supports the apps you use, has Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity, and offers a remote and interface you are comfortable with.
The right TV depends on your room, viewing habits and the devices you plan to connect. Use these practical points to compare models more confidently and spot the features that matter for your setup.
Measure the space before choosing a TV, including the width of the unit, wall area or cabinet. The advertised size refers to the diagonal screen measurement, so it is worth checking the full dimensions with the stand attached.
Think about how far away you usually sit. A large screen can be immersive in a living room, but a more compact model may be easier to watch comfortably in a bedroom, kitchen or home office.
Resolution, panel type, brightness, contrast and motion handling all affect how a TV looks. 4K is common across many modern TVs, while some premium models offer higher specifications for shoppers who want a more advanced home viewing setup.
If you watch in a bright room, pay attention to brightness and screen reflections. For evening films and darker rooms, contrast performance may be a higher priority.
Look for a smart TV platform that supports the apps and services you use regularly. Also consider how easy the menus and remote are likely to be for your household.
Count the devices you want to connect, such as a games console, set-top box, soundbar or media player. HDMI ports, USB ports, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Ethernet can all make a difference to everyday use.
TVs are increasingly slim, so built-in speakers may not be the main reason to choose one model over another. If clear dialogue, stronger bass or a more cinematic feel matters, consider how the TV will work with separate audio equipment.
Also check practical details such as wall-mount compatibility, cable positioning and whether the stand design suits your furniture.
Film fans may prioritise contrast, colour and HDR support, while sports viewers may care more about motion handling and screen size. For gaming, look closely at refresh rate, HDMI features and game mode options.
If the TV will be used by the whole household, balance picture quality with everyday convenience, including app support, parental controls where available and how simple the remote is to use.
