LG Tumble Dryers: Your essential buying guide
Heat pump tumble dryers are generally chosen for lower energy use, condenser dryers offer flexible placement without an external vent, and vented dryers need a hose or wall vent to expel moist air. The right choice depends on your budget, available space and whether you can vent the appliance outside.
For one or two people, a smaller drum can be enough for regular laundry. Families or households drying bulky items such as bedding and towels may prefer a larger capacity. It is worth matching the tumble dryer capacity to your washing machine so wet loads can be transferred easily.
Heat pump tumble dryers are often a strong choice if you dry clothes frequently and want a more energy-conscious option. They usually dry at lower temperatures, which can be gentler on fabrics, although cycles may take longer than some condenser or vented models.
Condenser and heat pump models offer more placement flexibility because they collect moisture in a tank or drain it away. Vented tumble dryers need access to an external wall, window or venting route. Always check the appliance dimensions, ventilation clearance and installation requirements before buying.
Sensor drying is particularly useful because it helps stop the cycle when clothes reach the selected dryness level. Other helpful features include delay start, anti-crease tumbling, wool or delicates programmes, reversible doors, child locks and clear filter or water-tank indicators.
Choosing a tumble dryer is about balancing running costs, capacity, installation and the way you dry your clothes. These key points can help you compare models more confidently before you buy.
Heat pump tumble dryers reuse warm air during the drying process, making them a popular option for households focused on energy efficiency. They are usually condenser-style appliances, so they do not need an outside vent.
Condenser tumble dryers collect moisture in a removable tank or can sometimes be connected to a drain. They are practical if you cannot install venting, but the water container will need emptying unless plumbed in.
Vented tumble dryers expel damp air through a hose. They can be straightforward to use, but they need a suitable external venting point, so they are less flexible for flats, internal utility rooms and rented homes.
Drum capacity is usually measured in kilograms and should reflect the size of the wet laundry loads you expect to dry. A smaller capacity may suit occasional use, while a larger drum is helpful for families and bulky loads.
Avoid overfilling the drum, as clothes need space for warm air to circulate. If you regularly wash large loads, compare tumble dryers with a capacity that comfortably matches your washing habits.
Measure the height, width and depth of the space carefully, including any skirting boards, door frames and worktop overhangs. Remember to allow room for airflow, the power cable and, where needed, a vent hose or drainage connection.
If the tumble dryer will sit near living areas, also compare noise levels and door design. Reversible doors or wider-opening doors can make loading and unloading easier in tighter spaces.
Look for programmes that match what you dry most often, such as cottons, synthetics, towels, bedding, sportswear, wool or delicates. Lower-temperature options can be useful for fabrics that need gentler handling.
Sensor drying helps prevent unnecessary drying time by monitoring moisture levels. Anti-crease settings can keep the drum moving after a cycle, reducing the chance of laundry sitting in a crumpled pile.
Energy labels can help you compare efficiency between tumble dryers of a similar size and type. If you expect to use the appliance frequently, efficiency may be a key factor in your shortlist.
Routine maintenance matters too. Clean the lint filter after use, empty the water tank when required and check any condenser or heat exchanger cleaning guidance in the manufacturer’s instructions.
