Horizon Fitness Treadmills: Your essential buying guide
Start with the running deck size, maximum user weight, speed range, incline settings and whether the frame folds for storage. If you plan to run rather than walk, prioritise a longer deck, stable build and suitable motor specification.
A folding treadmill can be useful if you need to reclaim floor space between workouts. Check the folded dimensions, wheel placement and locking mechanism, as some folding models are still quite large when stored.
Walkers can often manage with a shorter deck, while taller users and runners usually benefit from a longer and wider running surface. A roomier deck can feel more comfortable at higher speeds and during longer sessions.
Incline is useful if you want to add intensity without always increasing speed. It can help simulate hill training and make walking workouts more challenging, but the right choice depends on how varied you want your sessions to be.
Useful features can include preset programmes, quick speed controls, incline adjustment, heart-rate compatibility, bottle storage and a clear console. For shared households, user weight capacity and easy adjustment are also important.
A treadmill can make running and walking training more convenient, but the best choice depends on how you plan to use it, how much room you have and the type of workouts you prefer.
If you mainly want steady walking, a compact treadmill with a modest speed range may be enough. For jogging or running, look for a more stable frame, a deck that suits your stride and controls that are easy to adjust mid-session.
Regular runners should pay close attention to the running surface, motor specification and cushioning details. These elements affect how comfortable and practical the machine feels during repeated use.
Measure the space where the treadmill will be used, not just where it will be stored. You will need clearance around the machine so you can step on and off safely and move comfortably.
Folding treadmills can help in smaller homes, but compare both open and folded dimensions. Also consider the machine weight if you expect to move it between rooms.
Speed range matters if more than one person will use the treadmill or if your training may progress over time. Quick-change controls can be helpful for interval sessions where you switch pace frequently.
Incline settings add variety and can make walking workouts more demanding. Preset programmes are useful if you prefer guided sessions rather than manually changing settings throughout.
A clear display makes it easier to track time, speed, distance and other workout information while moving. Larger buttons and simple controls can be especially useful during faster sessions.
Other practical details include bottle holders, device shelves, heart-rate options and safety keys. Choose features you will genuinely use rather than paying attention to extras that do not fit your routine.
A treadmill is ideal if you want walking or running-based cardio at home. If you are still deciding between different types of indoor training equipment, it can be worth comparing treadmills with the wider fitness machine category before choosing.
Alternatives such as bikes, rowing machines or cross trainers may suit different movement preferences, but a treadmill remains the most direct option for indoor walking and running workouts.
