Nike Trainers: Your essential buying guide
For daily use, look for trainers with comfortable cushioning, a flexible sole and an upper material that suits your routine. Leather or faux leather styles are easy to wipe clean, while mesh and knitted uppers can feel lighter and more breathable.
Some trainers can work for light activity, but they are not always designed for sport-specific support. If you need footwear for running, gym training, basketball or other sports, it is worth comparing dedicated performance shoe categories instead.
Canvas trainers are casual and lightweight, leather styles are often more structured, suede gives a softer look, and mesh or knitted trainers are usually more breathable. Consider how often you will wear them and how easy you need them to be to clean.
Trainers should feel secure around the heel and midfoot without pinching. Leave a little room at the toes, especially if you plan to wear thicker socks or spend long periods walking.
White, black, grey and navy trainers are versatile choices that work with many casual outfits. Brighter colours, metallic finishes and patterned designs can be a good option if you want the trainers to stand out.
Trainers cover everything from minimal casual pairs to statement fashion styles. Comparing fit, sole type, material and intended use will help you find a pair that suits your wardrobe and your day-to-day plans.
Start with the main purpose. Everyday trainers for commuting, errands and casual wear should prioritise comfort, durability and easy styling.
If you are shopping for sport or structured workouts, general trainers may not provide the right support. Look at more specific shoe categories when you need cushioning, stability or grip designed for a particular activity.
Leather and faux leather trainers are practical for everyday outfits and can be simple to keep looking tidy. Suede has a softer finish but usually needs more care, especially in wet weather.
Canvas, mesh and knitted uppers tend to feel lighter and more relaxed. These can be good for warmer days or casual styling, though they may offer less structure than firmer materials.
A flat, low-profile sole can give trainers a clean, classic look, while chunkier soles add height and a more contemporary feel. Flexible soles are useful for comfort when you are on your feet for long periods.
Check the level of cushioning if you plan to walk often. A padded insole and supportive midsole can make a noticeable difference for everyday wear.
Trainer sizing can vary by brand and style, so compare size options carefully. Lace-up trainers allow more adjustment, while slip-on designs need to fit securely from the start.
Consider sock thickness and foot shape. If you have wider feet, look for rounded toe boxes or styles that mention a roomier fit.
Minimal white, black or neutral trainers are easy to pair with jeans, chinos, dresses and relaxed tailoring. Retro silhouettes and gum soles can add a vintage feel.
Chunky trainers, bold colours and textured panels create more impact. They work well when you want your footwear to be a focal point rather than a simple finishing touch.
