Loctite Threadlockers: Your essential buying guide
Low-strength threadlocker is suited to small screws and fixings you may need to adjust. Medium-strength options are common for general nuts, bolts and machine screws. High-strength threadlockers are intended for more permanent assemblies, so check whether future removal will be practical before buying.
Threadlocker is designed for threaded metal fixings, but suitability depends on the product formula, material and working conditions. Always check the manufacturer’s guidance for compatible metals, thread size, temperature range and whether a primer is needed.
Removable threadlockers are formulated so fixings can usually be undone with standard hand tools. Permanent threadlockers create a stronger bond and may require heat or extra effort to release, making them better for fixings that should not loosen during normal use.
Yes, clean, dry threads usually help threadlocker perform as intended. Remove oil, grease, dust and loose debris before application, and check the product instructions if the fixing is plated, oily or made from a less reactive metal.
In most cases, a small amount on the threaded area is enough, but the correct quantity depends on the thread size and product instructions. Over-application can cause mess or make disassembly harder, so compare nozzle styles and bottle sizes as well as strength.
Threadlockers may look similar, but the right choice depends on the fixing, the level of hold required and the conditions the joint will face. Use ShopSmarty to compare options by specification so you can choose a product that suits the job rather than overbuying or selecting a bond that is too strong.
Strength is the main buying decision. Low-strength formulas are useful where small fixings need to be secured but still adjusted or removed later. Medium-strength threadlockers suit many general DIY and maintenance jobs where vibration resistance is needed without making removal too difficult.
High-strength threadlockers are for fixings that are intended to stay put. They can be difficult to undo, so consider whether the part may need servicing, repositioning or replacement before choosing a permanent-grade product.
Threadlockers are typically used on metal threaded fixings such as screws, bolts, nuts and studs. Check product information for compatible materials, thread sizes and any limitations around stainless steel, plated parts or inactive metals.
If you are working alongside other building materials such as plugs, screws, rivets or washers, treat the threadlocker as part of the fixing system. The mechanical fixing still needs to be correctly sized and suitable for the load and substrate.
For fixings on tools, machinery, vehicles, gates, handles or equipment, vibration resistance may be a key reason for using a threadlocker. Compare temperature ranges, oil tolerance and any resistance claims carefully against the job conditions.
Indoor household tasks may only need a general-purpose product, while exposed or high-stress applications may call for a more specialised grade. Always follow the product label for curing conditions and safe use.
Small bottles can be practical for occasional DIY use, while larger sizes may suit repeat maintenance work. Look at the applicator as well as the volume, as fine nozzles can make it easier to apply threadlocker neatly to small screws.
If you only need a few drops per fixing, buying the largest bottle is not always the most practical choice. Consider storage guidance and how often you expect to use it.
Think about whether the fixing will need to be undone for adjustment, inspection or replacement. A removable grade can be more suitable for items such as brackets, handles and adjustable fittings, while permanent grades should be reserved for assemblies where loosening would be a problem.
Check whether removal may require heat, specific tools or extra force. This helps avoid damaging surrounding parts or choosing a threadlocker that is stronger than the job needs.
