M&S Table Lamps: Your essential buying guide
Match the lamp to the surface and the job it needs to do. A small bedside table usually suits a compact lamp, while a console table or large sideboard can take a taller or wider design. Check the overall height and shade width so it does not overwhelm the furniture or sit too close to nearby walls.
Table lamps can work well for reading if they provide directed, comfortable light. Look for a suitable shade shape, an adjustable arm or head if needed, and compatibility with a bulb brightness that suits close-up tasks. For bedside reading, make sure the switch is easy to reach.
Fabric shades usually create a softer, diffused glow, while glass or metal shades can feel more decorative or direct the light more strongly. The best choice depends on whether you want ambient mood lighting, a focused pool of light, or a lamp that acts as a design feature when switched off.
LED table lamps are a practical choice if you want efficient everyday lighting, and some include built-in LEDs or dimming options. If you prefer changing bulbs yourself, check whether the lamp uses a replaceable bulb and confirm the cap fitting, maximum wattage and compatible bulb type.
For bedrooms, softer shapes, warm finishes and diffused shades can create a relaxed feel. In living rooms, table lamps can be used to balance ceiling lights, highlight a corner or add texture with ceramic, wood, brass, glass or sculptural bases. Choose a finish that complements nearby furniture and metalwork.
The right table lamp should look balanced on your furniture, give the type of light you need and fit naturally with the rest of your indoor lighting. Use the points below to compare options more confidently before shortlisting a style.
Start with how the lamp will be used. A bedside table lamp may need a soft, calming glow and an easy-to-reach switch, while a desk or reading table lamp benefits from more focused light.
For occasional tables and sideboards, the lamp may be more decorative, helping to add height, warmth and visual interest to the room even when it is not the main light source.
Measure the table, shelf or console before choosing. The shade should sit comfortably within the available space, leaving room for everyday items and avoiding overhang where it may be knocked.
Consider the height of nearby seating or bed frames too. A lamp that is too low may not spread light effectively, while one that is too tall can cause glare at eye level.
Drum and tapered shades are popular for general ambient light, while narrower or opaque shades can direct light more precisely. Lighter fabrics usually diffuse light gently, whereas darker shades can create a moodier effect.
Base materials also influence the look. Ceramic and glass can feel decorative, metal can look sleek or traditional depending on the finish, and wood or rattan can bring a warmer, natural texture.
Check the lamp holder, recommended bulb type and maximum wattage before buying. If a lamp has an integrated LED, look at the light colour and whether it offers dimming or multiple brightness settings.
Switch placement matters in daily use. Inline switches, base switches and touch controls all feel different, so choose the option that suits where the lamp will sit.
Table lamps work best when they complement other light sources rather than trying to do everything alone. Pairing them with ceiling, wall or floor lighting can help create layered lighting for relaxing, reading and entertaining.
If you are planning a full room refresh, compare table lamps with other indoor lighting styles so the finishes, colour temperature and overall mood feel consistent.
