RingRing Surveillance Cameras: Your essential buying guide
Start with where the camera will be used, as indoor and outdoor locations have different requirements. Then compare resolution, field of view, night vision, motion detection, audio features, storage options, power source and whether the camera connects by Wi-Fi or cable.
Wired cameras can be a strong choice for fixed installations where a stable connection and continuous power are important. Wireless cameras can be easier to position and may suit rented homes, temporary setups or areas where running cables is difficult. The better option depends on your layout and how permanent you want the installation to be.
Night vision is useful if you want monitoring in low light, such as driveways, gardens, entrances, stock rooms or corridors after dark. Compare the stated night vision type and range, and consider whether you need discreet infrared monitoring or a camera with a visible light feature.
Higher resolution can provide a clearer image, which may help with recognising details such as faces, vehicles or activity at a doorway. However, it can also affect storage use and bandwidth, so compare resolution alongside compression, storage method and your internet connection.
Depending on the camera and where it will be installed, you may need mounts, brackets, extension cables, power adapters, junction boxes, memory cards or protective housings. Checking compatible accessories before you buy can make installation simpler and help you position the camera correctly.
Choosing a surveillance camera is easier when you match the camera to the area you want to monitor, rather than focusing on one feature alone. Use ShopSmarty to compare practical details such as image quality, installation type, connectivity and compatible accessories before narrowing down your options.
For indoor rooms, hallways and entrances, look for a camera with an appropriate field of view, a discreet design and clear image quality. If you want to monitor a wider area, check the viewing angle and whether the camera can be tilted, panned or mounted to cover the right space.
For outdoor areas, compare weather resistance, mounting options, night vision and how the camera is powered. A camera installed by a front door, garage or garden will usually need a tougher build than one used inside.
Resolution, lens angle and low-light performance all affect how useful the footage will be. A higher-resolution camera may capture more detail, while a wider lens can cover more of a room, doorway or driveway.
Night vision is worth comparing closely if the camera will be used after dark. Consider whether the camera uses infrared, built-in lighting or another low-light method, and check whether the claimed range suits the area you want to monitor.
Battery-powered cameras can be flexible, but you will need to consider recharging or battery replacement. Mains-powered and wired cameras can be more suitable for permanent positions where you do not want to move the camera often.
Wi-Fi cameras can reduce cabling, while wired network cameras may suit larger or more fixed setups. Compare the connection requirements with your property layout, router position and where you plan to install each camera.
Surveillance cameras may support local storage, cloud storage or recording to a separate system, depending on the model. Compare how footage is saved, how easy it is to access and whether any ongoing service is required for the features you want.
Motion alerts, two-way audio, app control and activity zones can make a camera more useful day to day. Focus on the features that match your routine, rather than paying attention to functions you are unlikely to use.
The right accessories can make a major difference to camera placement. Mounts, brackets, extension leads, power supplies and protective housings can help you fit the camera at the correct height, angle and distance from a power source.
Before choosing a camera, check what is included and what may need to be bought separately. Comparing compatible accessories at the same time can help avoid installation delays or an awkward camera position.
