Tommee Tippee Super Steam Advanced Electric Steriliser - White
Tommee TippeeSterilisers: Your essential buying guide
Electric steam sterilisers are convenient for regular home use and often hold several bottles at once. Microwave sterilisers are usually more compact and simple to store, provided they fit your microwave. Cold water sterilising can be useful for travel or occasional use, while UV sterilisers may appeal if you want a water-free option for compatible items.
Choose capacity based on how often you feed and wash. A larger steriliser can suit bottle feeding or twins, while a smaller model may be enough for occasional bottles, dummies or breast pump parts. Always check the stated capacity against the bottle size and brand style you use.
No. Some sterilisers are designed around certain bottle shapes, while others have adjustable racks for different bottle sizes, teats and accessories. Before comparing offers, check the internal layout, maximum bottle height and whether wide-neck bottles, pump parts or dummies are supported.
A drying function can be useful if you want bottles ready to put away after a cycle, but it is not essential for every household. Basic steam and microwave sterilisers can still be practical, especially if you are happy to let items air dry or use them soon after sterilising according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Look for a clear cycle indicator, simple controls, easy draining, removable trays and parts that are straightforward to descale or clean. If kitchen space is limited, compare footprint and storage shape as well as capacity.
The right steriliser depends on your feeding routine, available space and the items you need to clean regularly. Use this guide to compare practical features before choosing a model.
Electric steam sterilisers are popular for everyday use because they plug in, run a set cycle and can usually handle multiple bottles. They are best suited to a fixed spot on the kitchen worktop.
Microwave sterilisers use steam inside your microwave and can be a space-saving choice, but you must check the dimensions against your microwave cavity. Cold water systems are simple and portable, while UV models may suit selected accessories where the manufacturer confirms compatibility.
Capacity is not only about how many bottles a steriliser claims to hold. Bottle height, neck width, teat shape and the layout of baskets or trays all affect what fits comfortably.
If you also sterilise dummies, breast pump parts or feeding accessories, look for flexible compartments and clear guidance on what can be placed inside. Avoid assuming every plastic item is suitable for steam, microwave or UV sterilising.
Cycle time matters if you need bottles ready quickly, especially during night feeds or busy mornings. Some models prioritise fast sterilising, while others add drying or storage features that take longer but reduce extra handling.
Also consider how long contents remain sterile when the lid stays closed, as stated by the manufacturer. This can be helpful if you prefer to prepare feeding equipment in batches.
Steam sterilisers can build up limescale, particularly in hard water areas, so easy descaling is an important feature. Removable trays, smooth surfaces and accessible water reservoirs can make regular maintenance less frustrating.
For microwave and cold water options, check how simple the unit is to empty, rinse and store. A steriliser that is quick to clean is more likely to fit comfortably into everyday baby care.
Large electric sterilisers can be useful for frequent feeds, but they take up worktop space. If your kitchen is compact, compare footprint, height under cupboards and whether the power cable position suits your layout.
For travel or occasional use, a smaller microwave or cold water steriliser may be easier to pack and store. Balance portability against the number of items you need to sterilise at once.
