Squash Rackets: Your essential buying guide
Lighter squash rackets can feel easier to manoeuvre and may suit players who like quick reactions at the front of the court. Heavier rackets can feel steadier through the swing and may suit players who prefer a more solid hit. The right choice depends on your strength, timing and preferred style of play.
A head-heavy racket can help generate momentum through the ball, while a head-light racket can feel quicker in the hand for volleys, flicks and fast exchanges. If you are unsure, a more evenly balanced racket is often a practical starting point.
Beginners often benefit from a racket that feels comfortable, forgiving and easy to swing rather than one aimed purely at advanced control. Look for a manageable weight, a comfortable grip size and a frame that gives you confidence when learning basic shots.
Yes. A more open string pattern may feel lively and help with power, while a denser pattern can offer a more controlled feel. String tension and string condition also affect how the racket plays, so consider the full specification rather than the pattern alone.
Consider replacing your racket if the frame is cracked, the handle feels unstable, or the racket no longer suits your level or style of play. You may also upgrade when you want a different balance, weight or feel as your technique develops.
Choosing a squash racket is about matching the frame to how you play, not just picking the lightest or most expensive option. Use ShopSmarty to compare racket specifications, availability and sale listings so you can narrow down choices before you buy.
If you play with quick hands and like to take the ball early, a racket that feels easy to manoeuvre may be more comfortable. If you prefer driving the ball deep and hitting with a fuller swing, you may prefer a racket with a steadier, more powerful feel.
All-round players should look for a balanced specification that does not push too far towards either extreme. This can make it easier to adapt as your technique improves.
Racket weight affects how quickly you can prepare for shots and how stable the racket feels on contact. A lighter frame may help with fast reactions, while a heavier option may suit players who want extra substance through the swing.
Balance is just as important as the listed weight. Two rackets can weigh a similar amount but feel very different if one carries more mass towards the head and the other feels lighter at the tip.
Power-focused rackets can help players who want easier length and depth, while control-focused rackets can suit those who prioritise accuracy and touch. Many players need a blend of both, especially for regular club play.
Forgiveness matters if your timing is still developing. A racket that feels comfortable on off-centre hits can make practice sessions more enjoyable and consistent.
A comfortable grip helps you hold the racket securely without squeezing too tightly. If the grip feels too small or worn, overgrips can adjust the feel and improve confidence in the hand.
Handling is especially important in squash because rallies often involve quick changes of direction, short swings and tight shots close to the wall.
When comparing squash rackets, look beyond the headline model name. Weight, balance, string pattern, frame shape and included grip details can all influence whether a racket is a good fit.
ShopSmarty is designed to help you compare current options and spot sale listings, making it easier to shortlist rackets that suit your game and budget.
