Anker Solar Panels: Your essential buying guide
Start with the space available on your roof or mounting area, the panel dimensions, the stated wattage and the type of system you want to build. Also check whether the panel is sold as a standalone item or as part of a kit, as this affects what other components you may need.
Not every roof will be suitable. Consider the roof condition, orientation, shading, available space and how the panels would be mounted. If the installation affects the roof structure or electrical system, get advice from a qualified professional before buying.
Wattage indicates the panel’s rated power output under standard test conditions. It helps you compare panels, but real-world output can vary depending on sunlight, shading, angle, temperature and the wider system setup.
In many cases, yes. Depending on the project, you may need mounting hardware, cables, connectors, an inverter, a charge controller, batteries or other electrical components. Always check what is included before comparing offers.
Some small off-grid or portable projects may be suitable for experienced DIYers, but roof-mounted and mains-connected solar installations can involve working at height and electrical work. Use qualified installers where required and make sure the system complies with UK regulations.
Solar panels vary by size, output, format and intended use, so it is worth comparing more than the headline specification. Think about where the panel will be fitted, how it will connect to the rest of the system and whether you need a single panel or a complete setup.
For roof-based projects, start by measuring the usable area and checking whether panels can be positioned away from heavy shade. Panel dimensions matter as much as wattage, especially where roof space is limited or awkwardly shaped.
If you are planning a broader building-surface installation, compare panels alongside the roof or wall area they need to work with. Make sure the product description suits the intended mounting position rather than assuming every panel is appropriate for every surface.
A higher wattage panel can produce more power under test conditions, but the best option depends on your available space, system design and budget. Two smaller panels may sometimes fit a space better than one larger panel.
Efficiency can be useful when comparing panels of a similar size, as it indicates how effectively the panel converts sunlight into electricity. Always compare like for like and check the full specification rather than relying on one number.
Some listings are for the solar panel only, while others may include mounting rails, brackets, cables or system components. This makes a big difference when comparing value across sale and clearance options.
Look closely at connectors, cable lengths and compatibility notes. If you already have an inverter, charge controller or battery, the panel needs to suit that setup.
Roof-mounted solar panels need secure fixing and safe access, and electrical work must be carried out correctly. If you are unsure about structural loading, waterproofing or wiring, speak to a qualified installer before purchasing.
For UK homes, planning, building and electrical requirements can vary depending on the property and installation. Check the relevant guidance before committing to a system.
ShopSmarty helps you compare solar panel options across available deals, so you can focus on specifications that matter: panel size, wattage, included parts and intended application.
When comparing sale listings, look for complete product details and avoid choosing purely by discount. The most useful deal is the one that fits your roof, system and installation plan.
