Chicago 2.5 Seater Sofa, Brown Leather - Barker & Stonehouse
Barker & StonehouseBARKER AND STONEHOUSE Sofas: Your essential buying guide
Start by measuring the wall or floor area where the sofa will sit, then leave enough room for walkways, side tables and doors to open fully. A two-seater can work well in smaller rooms, while three-seaters and larger designs suit wider living spaces or households that need more seating.
Fabric sofas often feel warm and comfortable, with plenty of colour and texture options. Leather and leather-look sofas can be easier to wipe clean, while velvet and boucle-style finishes offer a more statement look but may need more careful upkeep.
Look at the seat depth, back height, cushion style and arm shape. Deeper seats tend to suit lounging, firmer cushions can feel more supportive, and higher backs may be better if you prefer an upright sitting position.
Neutral shades such as grey, beige, taupe and charcoal are versatile and often easier to style with changing décor. Darker colours can help disguise everyday marks, while lighter sofas can make a room feel brighter but may need more frequent care.
A standard sofa is a strong choice for everyday living room seating. If you need a layout that fits a corner, want matching pieces, prefer reclining seats or need an occasional sleeping option, it may also be worth comparing nearby choices such as corner sofas, sofa sets, recliner sofas or sofa beds.
A sofa is one of the most-used pieces of living room furniture, so it is worth comparing size, comfort, material and shape before you decide. Use this guide to narrow down the options and find a sofa that fits both your home and how you relax.
Check the full width, depth and height of the area where your sofa will go. Remember to allow for skirting boards, radiators, plug sockets and the space needed to walk around the room comfortably.
It is also sensible to measure doorways, halls and stairs so you can judge whether a sofa is likely to fit through the route into your home. Modular or removable-leg designs may be worth considering where access is tight.
A straight sofa works well against a wall or facing a TV, fireplace or coffee table. Compact sofas suit flats and smaller lounges, while wider designs are better for stretching out or seating several people at once.
Think about how you use the room day to day. If you mostly sit upright, a firmer seat and higher back may feel better. If the sofa is for lounging, look for deeper seats, softer cushions and arms at a comfortable height.
Fabric sofas offer a broad choice of textures and colours, from woven neutrals to soft-touch finishes. They can add warmth to a living room and are easy to coordinate with cushions, throws and rugs.
Leather and leather-look sofas can be practical for busy homes because many finishes are simple to wipe down. Textured or plush fabrics can create a more decorative look, but always consider how much maintenance you are happy with.
Neutral sofas are flexible if you like to update your décor over time. Grey, cream, beige and brown can work with many living room schemes, while green, blue, rust or black can create a stronger focal point.
Also compare leg finishes, arm profiles and cushion details. Slim legs can make a sofa feel lighter in the room, while low-profile or chunky designs often create a more relaxed, substantial look.
Seat height matters if you want to get up easily, while seat depth affects whether the sofa feels upright or lounge-like. Cushion filling, back support and arm shape all play a part in long-term comfort.
If the sofa will be used by children, pets or guests, compare practical details such as removable cushion covers, durable fabrics and darker colourways. For a more formal room, style and finish may be just as important as everyday resilience.
