BalterleyShower Trays: Your essential buying guide
Measure the available floor area and check the exact width, depth and height of the tray before comparing options. Allow for the shower enclosure, door opening, wall finish and any pipework or boxing-in, as the tray needs to fit the finished space rather than the bare room dimensions.
Square trays suit compact shower spaces, rectangular trays are popular for larger enclosures and walk-in layouts, and quadrant trays can work well in corners where floor space is limited. Match the shape to the enclosure or screen you plan to use.
Low profile shower trays can create a neater, more contemporary look and may be easier to step into. However, they need suitable waste and drainage arrangements, so a raised tray or riser kit may be more practical if pipework needs extra clearance.
Look at where the waste hole sits on the tray and compare it with your existing or planned plumbing. A poorly matched waste position can make installation more complicated, so it is worth checking this before choosing a tray.
Shower trays can be made from materials such as acrylic-capped stone resin, ceramic, resin or other composite constructions. Compare the weight, rigidity, finish, slip-resistant surface details where stated, and installation requirements to find a tray that suits your bathroom project.

A shower tray needs to suit the space, drainage and enclosure as well as the style of your bathroom. Comparing the practical details first can help you narrow down options before focusing on finish and design.
Decide whether the tray is for a corner enclosure, alcove, walk-in shower or replacement unit. This will usually guide the shape you need, such as square, rectangular or quadrant.
If you are replacing an existing tray, check whether you want the same footprint or whether the surrounding walls, tiles and shower screen give you room to change size.
Low profile shower trays are often chosen for a flush, minimal appearance, but the available space beneath the tray affects whether this is practical.
Raised trays can be useful where waste pipes need to run above the floor. If you are unsure, compare trays alongside any compatible legs, plinths or riser options listed by the seller.
The waste position matters as much as the tray size. Check whether it is in a corner, centre or along one edge, and make sure it works with your pipe route.
Also consider the waste cover style and whether the waste fitting is included or needs to be purchased separately, as this can affect what else you need for installation.
The tray should work with the shower doors, panels or screens you plan to fit. Door swing, sliding door clearance and glass panel positioning can all affect the best tray size.
For corner showers, quadrant and square trays can make good use of limited space. For walk-in styles, longer rectangular trays are often compared because they provide more standing room and screen flexibility.
White trays are a common choice for a clean, versatile look, while textured or stone-effect finishes can add a more designed feel. Compare surface descriptions carefully, particularly if grip and ease of cleaning are important to you.
It is also worth matching the tray depth and edge style with your bathroom’s overall finish, including tiles, wall panels and enclosure frame colour.
