Shoe Laces: Your essential buying guide
Measure an existing lace that fits well, or count the number of eyelet pairs on each shoe and use that as a guide. Low trainers often need shorter laces, while high-top trainers, hiking boots and work boots usually need longer ones. If you are between lengths, consider how much bow length you prefer and whether the shoes need a snug or relaxed fit.
Flat laces are common on trainers and casual shoes because they spread pressure across the foot and often stay tied well. Round laces are typically used for boots, walking shoes and smarter footwear, especially where the eyelets or hooks suit a slimmer lace profile.
Waxed laces can look neater and feel more structured, making them a good choice for dress shoes, brogues and some boots. The coating can help the lace hold its shape, but it may feel less soft than a standard cotton or polyester lace.
Elastic laces work best in trainers, casual shoes and children’s shoes where easy slip-on access is useful. They may not be suitable for formal shoes or footwear that needs firm, adjustable support, such as some hiking boots or sports shoes used for high-impact activity.
Cotton laces offer a classic feel and suit many casual or smart shoes. Polyester and nylon laces are often chosen for everyday durability, sports footwear and outdoor shoes. Leather laces are more specialist and are usually used for certain boots, boat shoes or heritage-style footwear.
Shoe laces are a small detail, but the wrong pair can affect comfort, support and the overall look of your footwear. When comparing options, focus on length, shape, material, colour and the type of shoes you are updating.
Trainers and casual shoes usually suit flat laces, especially if the eyelets are wide and the design is sporty. Smart shoes often look better with thinner round or waxed laces, while boots may need stronger round laces that can cope with hooks, speed loops or thicker uppers.
If you are replacing laces for a favourite pair of shoes, start by matching the original style. For a change of look, keep the width and length practical so the laces still thread easily and tie securely.
Length is one of the most important details. A lace that is too short can be difficult to tie, while one that is too long may trail or need double knotting. Measuring your current lace is usually the simplest way to compare like for like.
Width matters too. Chunky flat laces can give trainers a bold look, but they may not pass smoothly through small eyelets. Slimmer round laces are better for formal shoes and many boots, but may feel less secure in wide trainer eyelets.
Cotton, polyester and nylon are common everyday choices, with each offering a different balance of softness, structure and wear resistance. Elastic laces are useful if you want easier on-off wear, while waxed laces can create a more polished finish for smarter footwear.
For outdoor or work footwear, look for laces that feel robust and suitable for repeated tightening. For fashion trainers or casual shoes, colour, texture and pattern may be just as important as durability.
Neutral colours such as black, brown, white, grey and navy are ideal when you want a clean replacement that blends in. Brighter colours, reflective styles or patterned laces can refresh plain trainers or make children’s shoes easier to spot.
For smarter shoes, choosing a lace close to the shoe colour usually gives the neatest result. For casual footwear, contrast laces can change the look without replacing the shoes themselves.
The plastic or metal tips at the end of laces, known as aglets, should be slim enough to pass through the eyelets. This is especially important for formal shoes, children’s footwear and boots with tight hardware.
If laces regularly come undone, compare options with a grippier texture, a suitable width and enough length for a secure knot. Elastic or no-tie styles can also be useful for convenience, but they should still hold the foot comfortably in place.
