Nikwax Shoe Care: Your essential buying guide
For smooth leather shoes, look for a suitable cleaner, a colour-matched or neutral polish or cream, a soft cloth, an applicator brush and a buffing brush. A leather conditioner can help keep the material supple, while a protector spray may add an extra layer of everyday defence.
Not usually. Suede and nubuck need gentler, material-specific care such as suede brushes, erasers and specialist sprays. Standard leather polish or cream can mark or flatten the nap, so always choose products labelled for the material you are treating.
Shoe polish is often used to add shine and improve the look of smooth leather, while shoe cream can help restore colour and nourish the surface. Conditioner is mainly for keeping leather flexible and preventing dryness, so many care routines use more than one product depending on the shoe.
Waterproofing and protector sprays vary by material, so check whether the product is suitable for leather, suede, nubuck, canvas or synthetic uppers. Some sprays may affect colour or finish, so it is sensible to test on a discreet area first.
It depends on how often you wear them and the conditions they face. Everyday shoes may benefit from light cleaning after wear and a deeper care routine every few weeks, while occasion shoes may only need polishing or conditioning before storage and before use.
Shoe care is about matching the product to the material, finish and level of wear. A good routine can help shoes look smarter, feel fresher and stay ready for regular use.
Smooth leather usually responds well to cleaners, creams, polishes and conditioners. If you are buying coloured products, match the shade as closely as possible, or choose neutral care when you want a more versatile option.
Suede and nubuck need specialist brushes, erasers and sprays that clean without clogging or flattening the textured surface. Avoid using standard leather polish on these materials unless the product specifically says it is suitable.
A useful starter kit might include a soft cloth, applicator brush, buffing brush, cleaner and a protector spray. For formal leather shoes, add polish or cream; for trainers, consider a cleaner suited to fabric, mesh or synthetic uppers.
If you own different shoe types, compare multi-surface products with specialist options. Multi-use care can be convenient, but specialist products are often better suited to delicate finishes.
Neutral polish and cream are practical for mixed shoe collections, but they may not restore colour as effectively as shade-matched products. Black, brown and tan shoes often benefit from colour-specific care when scuffs and fading are visible.
High-shine dress shoes, matte boots and casual trainers can all need different finishes. Check whether the product is designed to polish, nourish, clean, deodorise or protect before comparing options.
Remove loose dirt before applying creams, sprays or polish, as rubbing grit into the surface can cause marks. Let shoes dry naturally before treatment, especially if they have been worn in wet weather.
Protector sprays are best applied to clean, dry shoes and may need reapplying over time. Always follow the product instructions, use sprays in a well-ventilated area and test first if you are unsure about colour change.
