Waltons Sheds: Your essential buying guide
Measure the available base area first, allowing space to open the door and walk around the shed for maintenance. A small shed can suit hand tools and garden accessories, while larger sheds are better for lawnmowers, outdoor furniture, ladders and bulkier DIY equipment.
Wooden sheds offer a traditional look and can be painted or treated, but usually need more upkeep. Metal sheds are often chosen for durability and low maintenance, while plastic sheds can be practical for weather resistance and easier cleaning. The best choice depends on your garden style, storage needs and how much maintenance you are happy to do.
Yes, most sheds need a firm, level base to help keep the structure stable and reduce issues with damp, twisting or poor door alignment. Common options include paving slabs, concrete bases, timber frames and purpose-made shed base systems, depending on the shed type and ground conditions.
Apex roofs have a central ridge and can provide more headroom in the middle, which is useful if you want to stand comfortably or store taller items. Pent roofs slope in one direction and can work well against boundaries or in tighter spaces, especially where a lower-profile design is preferred.
Compare the internal dimensions, door width, lock compatibility, window placement, roof covering, floor inclusion and ventilation. It is also worth checking whether the shed layout will suit the items you plan to store, rather than choosing by overall footprint alone.
A shed is one of the most useful garden outbuildings, but the right choice depends on what you need to store, how much space you have and how much maintenance you want to take on. Use ShopSmarty to compare shed styles and shortlist options that fit your garden layout.
List the items that will live in the shed before choosing a size. Hand tools, plant pots and garden chemicals need far less room than lawnmowers, bikes, pressure washers, ladders or outdoor furniture.
Think about access as well as capacity. Double doors can make it easier to move bulky equipment in and out, while shelving-friendly wall space helps keep smaller items organised.
Timber sheds are popular for a classic garden look and can blend well with fences, decking and planting. They may need periodic treatment to help protect the wood and maintain their appearance.
Metal sheds are a practical choice where low maintenance is a priority, while plastic sheds can be easy to clean and suitable for general garden storage. Compare construction, ventilation and floor details carefully, as these can affect everyday use.
Measure the available space accurately and allow extra clearance for door swing, roof overhang and access around the sides. A shed that fits too tightly can be awkward to assemble, maintain and use.
Apex roofs can offer a more traditional look and useful central headroom. Pent roofs are often chosen for neater placement near a fence or wall, especially in modern or compact gardens.
A shed should sit on a solid, level surface. A poor base can lead to movement, water pooling or doors that become difficult to close.
Check the shed requirements before deciding between concrete, paving slabs, timber bearers or a dedicated base kit. Preparing the base properly can make the shed easier to assemble and more reliable in day-to-day use.
If you are comparing sheds but your storage need is very specific, it may be useful to look at other outbuilding categories too. A general shed is versatile, but a specialist option can sometimes make better use of space.
For example, bike sheds are designed around cycle access, firewood sheds help keep logs organised, and garden storage units can suit smaller patios or courtyards where a full shed may be too large.
