CT1 Sealant: Your essential buying guide
Look for a sealant described as suitable for wet areas, sanitary use or mould-resistant applications. Bathrooms, showers, sinks and worktops need a product that can cope with moisture and regular cleaning, while still bonding well to tiles, ceramics, glass or worktop materials.
Only some sealants are paintable. Acrylic decorator’s sealant is commonly chosen for gaps around skirting, architraves and interior trim because it can usually be painted once cured. Silicone sealants are often not paintable, so always check the product details before buying.
Interior sealants are typically used for finishing gaps inside the home, while exterior sealants need to withstand weather, temperature changes and UV exposure. For outdoor joints around frames, masonry or roofline details, choose a sealant specifically marked for exterior use.
Choose white or clear sealant for many bathroom, kitchen and glazing jobs, or a coloured option when you need to match timber, masonry, flooring or worktops. If the joint will be painted, a paintable sealant may be more practical than trying to match the final colour.
Many cartridge sealants are designed to be used with a standard sealant or caulking gun. Smaller tubes may be squeezable by hand. Check the pack format before comparing, especially if you only need a small repair or already have a gun for larger jobs.
The right sealant depends on where it will be used, what it needs to stick to and whether the joint must stay flexible, resist water or take paint. Comparing these details before you buy helps you avoid poor adhesion, cracking or an untidy finish.
For bathrooms, showers and sinks, prioritise water resistance and suitability for sanitary areas. For gaps around skirting boards, door frames and trim, a paintable decorator’s sealant is often the more practical choice.
For windows, exterior frames, masonry joints or outside repairs, look for sealant intended for outdoor exposure. Movement, weather and surface type all affect how well a product performs.
Sealant is not universal, so compare the surfaces listed in the product information. Common application surfaces include ceramic, glass, plastic, metal, timber, plaster and masonry, but suitability varies by formula.
If you are sealing around mixed materials, such as a window frame against brickwork or a worktop against tiles, choose a product that can bond to both surfaces and cope with any movement between them.
Some joints expand, contract or move slightly over time. A flexible sealant is important around frames, baths, showers, worktops and other areas where rigid filler may crack.
For static interior gaps that will be decorated, a paintable gap-filling sealant may be enough. For high-movement or wet areas, compare products designed to stay elastic after curing.
Colour and finish matter, especially in visible areas. Clear sealant can suit glass and neat joins, while white is common around sanitary fittings and trim. Brown, grey or black options may suit timber, masonry or modern fixtures.
If the sealant line will be painted, check that the product is paintable and note any recommended curing time before applying paint.
A small tube can be convenient for quick repairs, while cartridges are better suited to longer runs and repeat use. Make sure the pack type matches the tools you have, particularly if a cartridge requires a sealant gun.
Coverage depends on bead width, depth and how many joints you need to seal. For larger DIY projects, comparing pack size alongside intended use can help you choose a practical quantity.
