ForgefixForgefix Screws: Your essential buying guide
For timber, look for wood screws with a suitable length, gauge and thread design. Countersunk heads are useful when you want the screw to sit flush, while pan or round heads are better where the head can remain visible. For outdoor timber, choose a corrosion-resistant finish suitable for exterior use.
The screw should be long enough to hold securely in the base material without breaking through where it should not. As a general buying check, consider the thickness of the item being fixed, the depth of the receiving material and whether a plug or pilot hole is needed.
Countersunk heads sit flush in the surface, pan heads have a rounded raised profile, and hex heads are often used where higher torque is needed. The best choice depends on whether appearance, grip, tool access or load-bearing performance matters most for the job.
Wall plugs are usually needed when fixing into masonry, plasterboard or hollow surfaces unless the screw is specifically designed for direct fixing into that material. Match the screw size to the plug size and check that both are suitable for the wall type.
Common drive types include Pozi, Phillips, Torx and slotted. Torx and Pozi drives can offer good tool engagement for many DIY tasks, while slotted screws are often chosen for traditional fittings. Always match the screwdriver bit exactly to reduce slipping and damage.
Screws may look similar at first glance, but small differences in size, thread, head and coating can affect how well they hold and how easy they are to fit. Use the sections below to compare screw options more confidently for your project.
Start with the material you are fastening into. Wood screws are designed for timber and sheet wood, drywall screws are made for fixing plasterboard, and masonry screws or screws used with plugs are intended for harder wall materials.
If you are joining different materials, such as a bracket to timber or a fitting to masonry, check both the screw type and any required plug, anchor or washer before deciding.
Length affects how deeply the screw bites into the receiving material, while diameter, often referred to as gauge, affects strength and the size of pilot hole or plug required. Too short may not hold; too large may split timber or damage the fitting.
Pack size is worth comparing for repeat tasks. A small pack can suit one repair, while larger trade-style packs may be more practical for decking, framing, boarding or ongoing DIY work.
The head shape affects both appearance and function. Countersunk screws are useful for flush finishes, while pan, round or hex heads can provide a visible fixing point or stronger tool contact.
The drive type should match the tools you already have or plan to use. A well-matched bit helps reduce cam-out, stripped heads and surface damage, especially when using a drill driver.
For dry indoor jobs, standard finishes may be suitable. For kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor timber or areas exposed to moisture, look for screws with an appropriate corrosion-resistant coating or material.
If the fixing will be visible, finish can also matter visually. Bright zinc, black, brass-effect or stainless finishes can change how the screw looks against hinges, brackets, handles or timber.
Some jobs need more than screws alone. Wall plugs help screws grip in masonry or certain wall types, washers can spread load or protect surfaces, and threadlockers can help secure threaded fasteners where vibration is a concern.
For tasks where screws are not the best answer, other fasteners such as nails, rivets or brackets may be more suitable. Compare the fixing method against the material, load and finish you need.
