Breville Sandwich Toasters: Your essential buying guide
A two-slice sandwich toaster is usually enough for one or two people and is easier to store. Larger four-slice models are more useful for families or anyone making several toasties at once, but they take up more worktop and cupboard space.
Deep-fill plates are useful if you like thicker bread or more generous fillings, as they give the sandwich more room to close without spilling as easily. If you mainly make simple cheese or ham toasties, a standard model may be sufficient.
Non-stick plates help reduce stuck-on cheese and crumbs, while removable plates can make cleaning more convenient if the model includes them. A design with fewer grooves and a secure seal can also help limit filling leaks.
Some sandwich toasters can handle flatter paninis, wraps or pittas, especially if they have larger plates or a floating hinge. Check the plate shape and depth, as classic cut-and-seal models are mainly designed for standard sliced bread.
Compare capacity, plate style, wattage, non-stick finish, storage options and cleaning features. It is also worth checking the overall footprint if you have limited kitchen space or plan to keep it in a cupboard between uses.
A good sandwich toaster should suit the way you eat, the bread you buy and the space you have available. Use this guide to compare the key features before choosing a model.
For occasional lunches or solo use, a compact two-slice sandwich toaster is often the most practical choice. It heats a smaller cooking area and is usually simpler to store.
If you regularly make toasties for more than two people, a four-slice model can save time. Check the appliance dimensions as well as the number of portions, as larger sandwich toasters need more worktop and storage space.
Classic sandwich toaster plates press, seal and often cut the bread into triangular toasties. They are ideal if you want the traditional sealed-edge style with melted fillings inside.
Some models use flatter or grill-style plates, which can be more flexible for panini-style sandwiches and other breads. If you want crisp ridges rather than sealed pockets, compare the plate design carefully.
Melted cheese and sauces can escape during cooking, so cleaning matters. Non-stick plates are a key feature to compare, as they can make it easier to wipe away crumbs and residue after use.
Removable plates may be helpful if you want more thorough cleaning, but not every sandwich toaster includes them. Also consider whether the appliance has overflow channels or a shape that helps contain spills.
If your kitchen is short on space, look for a sandwich toaster with upright storage or a compact footprint. Cord storage can also help keep cupboards tidier.
Heat-resistant handles, secure locking clips and indicator lights can make everyday use simpler. These small details are worth comparing if you expect to use the toaster often.
For basic cheese toasties, a straightforward model with non-stick plates may be all you need. For thicker bread, extra fillings or more varied snacks, deep-fill plates and a stronger hinge design can be more suitable.
If you are comparing sandwich toasters as part of a wider kitchen refresh, it can be useful to browse related kitchen appliances too, but keep your choice focused on how often you will actually make toasties.
