Asics Running Shoes: Your essential buying guide
Running shoes should feel secure around the heel and midfoot, with enough room at the toes so they do not press or rub as your feet move. Many runners prefer a little extra space at the front to allow for natural swelling during longer runs.
Cushioned running shoes are designed to soften impact and can suit steady training, longer distances or runners who prefer a plush feel. Lightweight running shoes usually feel more responsive and stripped back, which may appeal for faster runs, gym treadmill sessions or shorter distances.
Supportive running shoes can be useful if you want extra stability through the midfoot or heel. Look for features such as a structured upper, firm heel counter and stable sole shape. If you are unsure, compare neutral and stability-style options and choose the pair that feels most natural and comfortable.
Yes, many road running shoes can work well on treadmills because they are typically designed for smooth, firm surfaces. For treadmill use, focus on comfort, breathability, grip and whether the cushioning feels right for your usual pace and distance.
Consider replacing running shoes when the cushioning feels flat, the tread is visibly worn, the upper no longer holds your foot securely or you notice new discomfort during familiar runs. Wear varies by runner, surface and training frequency, so condition matters more than a fixed timescale.
Choosing running shoes is about matching comfort, support and grip to the way you run. Use the sections below to compare the details that make the biggest difference before you buy.
For pavements, treadmills and smooth paths, look for running shoes with dependable cushioning and an outsole that feels stable on hard ground. A flexible forefoot can help the shoe move naturally as you roll through each stride.
If you regularly use park paths or mixed routes, consider running shoes with more visible tread and a secure upper. Extra grip can help when surfaces are damp, loose or uneven.
Higher cushioning can make daily training and longer runs feel softer underfoot, especially if you prefer comfort over ground feel. It can also be useful if you are building distance or want a more protective ride.
Lower-profile or firmer running shoes may suit runners who like a more direct, responsive feel. They can be a good option for shorter runs or faster sessions, provided they still feel comfortable and stable.
Neutral running shoes are often chosen by runners who feel balanced without added guidance. Stability-focused options may include firmer areas or a wider base to help the foot feel more controlled through landing and take-off.
If you are comparing support levels, pay attention to how the shoe feels when standing, walking and jogging. A supportive running shoe should guide your stride without feeling restrictive or awkward.
A breathable mesh upper can help keep the shoe feeling comfortable during warmer runs or indoor treadmill sessions. More structured uppers may provide a firmer hold, which can be useful if your foot moves around inside softer shoes.
The heel should feel locked in without rubbing, and the laces should let you adjust the fit evenly across the midfoot. If the tongue slips or the heel lifts, compare different lace layouts or upper designs.
Running shoes are designed for repeated forward movement, cushioning and foot hold during exercise. They are different from general shoes that may prioritise style, smart wear or casual comfort over running-specific performance.
If you are browsing beyond running pairs, the wider shoes category can help you compare other footwear types for non-running use.
