OhsOHS Rugs: Your essential buying guide
A good starting point is to choose a rug large enough to connect the main furniture, rather than sitting as a small island in the middle of the room. In many living rooms, shoppers look for a rug that sits at least partly under the sofa and chairs, while smaller rooms may suit a rug placed neatly in front of the seating.
For high-traffic spaces such as hallways, kitchens and family rooms, look for durable, easy-care materials and a weave that can cope with regular use. Flatweave and low-pile rugs are often practical choices because they are less likely to trap dirt than deep-pile styles.
Yes. Outdoor rugs are designed with patios, balconies and garden seating areas in mind, so shoppers usually compare them by weather-suitable materials, quick-drying construction and easy cleaning. Indoor rugs are more focused on comfort, texture and decorative finish.
A rug gripper can be useful on smooth floors or anywhere a rug might move underfoot. It can help keep the rug positioned more securely, reduce curling at the edges and add a little extra stability, especially in hallways and living spaces.
For children’s rooms, compare rugs by softness, ease of cleaning, pile height and design. Low-pile or washable styles can be practical for play areas, while colourful patterns, themed designs or simple neutral rugs can help tie the room together.
Rugs can define a room, soften hard flooring and add colour, texture or pattern without a full redecorating project. The best choice depends on where the rug will sit, how much foot traffic it will get and whether you want a subtle base layer or a standout feature.
Start with the space. A living room rug often needs to anchor furniture and feel comfortable underfoot, while hallway rugs and stair treads should be chosen with movement, grip and durability in mind.
For entrances, compare mats and door mats that can handle dirt and moisture near the doorway. For patios and balconies, outdoor rugs are better suited to exposed or semi-exposed spaces than standard indoor rugs.
Traditional rugs work well if you want a classic pattern, bordered design or heritage-inspired look. They can add depth to neutral rooms or complement wooden furniture and warmer colour palettes.
Moroccan style rugs are a popular option for relaxed interiors, often using geometric patterns, soft neutrals or textured finishes. If you want a more premium look, compare luxury rugs by material, construction and detailing.
Low-pile rugs are usually easier to place under furniture and can be more practical in dining areas, hallways and busy family spaces. Deeper pile rugs feel softer and cosier, making them appealing for bedrooms and snug seating areas.
If spills, pets or muddy shoes are part of daily life, compare rugs with straightforward care instructions and finishes that suit regular cleaning. For children’s rooms, washable or easy-care options can make day-to-day use simpler.
Measure the floor space before browsing, then check how much border you want around the rug. In dining rooms, allow space for chairs to move without catching on the rug edge.
For bedrooms, consider whether you want one large rug under the bed or smaller rugs either side. In narrow areas, runners or stair treads may be more suitable than standard rectangular rugs.
Rugs placed on wood, laminate, tile or vinyl flooring may shift more easily, particularly in walkways. A suitable rug gripper can help reduce movement and keep the rug sitting flatter.
Check the rug backing and the type of floor before choosing a gripper, as different surfaces may need different solutions. This is especially worth considering for runners, hallway rugs and lighter flatweave designs.
