Roberts Radio Radios: Your essential buying guide
For general home use, look for a radio with clear controls, enough volume for the room and the tuning format you prefer. A mains-powered model suits regular listening in one spot, while a portable radio with battery power is better if you want to move it around the house or garden.
DAB can offer a wider station selection and station names on the display, while FM remains useful for familiar local stations and simple tuning. Many shoppers choose a radio with both DAB and FM so they have more flexibility depending on signal availability.
For a bedside radio, consider a clear dimmable display, alarm settings, snooze control and easy-to-use buttons. A compact shape is helpful on a bedside table, and preset stations make it quicker to access your usual listening.
Choose a portable radio if you want to listen in different rooms, outdoors or away from a socket. A plug-in radio is often more convenient for a fixed place such as a kitchen worktop, home office or bedroom, as you do not need to manage batteries as often.
Some radios include Bluetooth or an auxiliary input, allowing you to play audio from a phone, tablet or other compatible device. If this matters to you, check the connectivity options carefully, as not every radio includes these features.
A good radio should suit where you listen, how you tune in and how simple you want the controls to be. Use ShopSmarty to compare radio features and spot models that match your day-to-day listening habits.
Start by checking whether the radio supports FM, DAB or both. FM is familiar and straightforward, while DAB can make it easier to browse stations by name where coverage is available.
If you like quick access to favourite stations, look for preset buttons or a simple menu system. This is especially useful for kitchen, bedroom and family-room radios.
A kitchen radio should be easy to wipe, simple to operate and loud enough to hear while cooking. A bedside radio benefits from alarm functions, a readable clock and controls you can find without fuss.
For garden, shed or occasional outdoor use, portability matters more. Check whether the radio uses replaceable batteries, a rechargeable battery or mains power only.
Compact radios are practical for shelves and bedside tables, but larger models may offer a fuller sound and more visible controls. Consider the room size and whether the radio will be used for background listening or more focused listening.
Some radios are designed mainly for speech, while others are better suited to music. Look at speaker arrangement, tone controls and headphone output if those details are important to how you listen.
Useful extras can include Bluetooth, alarm functions, sleep timers, USB power, headphone sockets and display dimming. These features are not essential for everyone, so focus on the ones you will actually use.
If the radio will be used by several people, straightforward buttons and a clear display can be just as important as extra functions.
Radios are ideal for quick access to stations and simple everyday listening. If you are also considering broader listening setups, nearby home audio categories such as CD players or audio systems may be worth comparing separately, but they serve different needs.
Keeping your search focused on radios helps you assess the details that matter most for radio listening, such as tuner type, presets, portability and alarm features.
