Graco Pushchairs: Your essential buying guide
For a newborn, look for a pushchair with a lie-flat seat or compatibility with a carrycot, as young babies need a flat, supportive position. Also consider sun protection, suspension and how easy it is to lift or fold if you will use it daily.
Check the age and weight suitability, folded size, handle height, wheel type, brake position and storage basket capacity. It is also worth thinking about where you will use it most, such as pavements, public transport, car boots or park paths.
Lightweight pushchairs can be very practical for travel, quick trips and smaller homes, but they may have less padding, storage or all-terrain stability than larger models. Compare the seat recline, wheel design and fold to make sure it suits your routine.
A pushchair usually refers to the main wheeled seat unit, while a travel system is designed to work with compatible extras such as a car seat or carrycot. If you want one setup from birth through toddler stages, check compatibility carefully before choosing.
Useful pushchair accessories can include rain covers, footmuffs, cup holders, buggy boards, organisers and sunshades. Choose accessories that match your pushchair model and your usual journeys rather than buying extras you may not use.
The right pushchair depends on your child’s age, your storage space and how you travel day to day. Use this guide to compare the key choices before you shortlist products.
For city pavements and public transport, a compact fold and manageable weight can make a big difference. If you regularly walk over uneven paths, look for larger wheels, good suspension and a sturdy frame.
Families using a car often need to check boot space and folded dimensions. If you have a newborn, make sure the pushchair offers a suitable lie-flat position or works with a compatible carrycot.
A reclining seat, adjustable calf support and padded harness can help keep your child comfortable as they grow. For younger babies, good head support and a sheltered seat are especially important.
Handle height matters for adults too. If more than one person will use the pushchair, an adjustable handlebar can make everyday pushing more comfortable.
Before comparing styles, consider where the pushchair will be kept at home and how often it will be lifted. A one-hand fold may be useful when juggling bags or holding a child.
Storage baskets vary in size and access, so check whether they suit shopping, changing bags or nursery essentials. A compact fold is helpful for smaller hallways, car boots and travel.
Small swivel wheels can feel nimble in shops and tight spaces, while larger wheels may cope better with kerbs, parks and uneven ground. Lockable front wheels can add stability when walking on rougher surfaces.
If you expect to use the pushchair in different conditions, compare tyre style, suspension and brake placement as well as overall weight.
Accessories can make a pushchair more practical in changing weather or on longer outings. Rain covers, footmuffs, organisers and sunshades are common additions, but compatibility varies by model.
Only add extras that suit your lifestyle and the pushchair you choose. Checking accessory options early can help you avoid a setup that feels incomplete later.
