XGIMI Projectors: Your essential buying guide
Choose resolution based on how you plan to use the projector and how large the image will be. Full HD can suit general films, TV and presentations, while 4K projectors are better suited to larger screens and sharper home cinema viewing. For occasional use or basic slides, lower resolutions may still be practical.
Brightness matters most in rooms with daylight or ambient lighting. A darker room can work with a lower-brightness projector, while living rooms, offices and daytime viewing usually benefit from a brighter model. Always consider your screen size and how much light you can control in the space.
Standard throw projectors need more distance from the screen or wall. Short-throw models can create a large image from closer away, which is useful in smaller rooms. Ultra-short-throw projectors sit very close to the wall or screen, making them a practical alternative where ceiling mounting or long cable runs are not ideal.
A plain wall can work for casual viewing, but a projector screen usually gives a more consistent surface, better image shape and improved contrast. If you want a neater home cinema setup, compare screens alongside the projector to match the room size, projector type and viewing distance.
Look for connections that match your devices, such as HDMI for streaming sticks, games consoles, laptops and Blu-ray players. USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and audio outputs may also be useful depending on your setup. If you plan to use external speakers, check the audio connection options before choosing.
The right projector depends on your room, the type of content you watch and how permanent you want the setup to be. Use these points to narrow down the options before comparing current deals and availability.
For a dedicated home cinema room, you can prioritise image quality, contrast and screen size because lighting is easier to control. For a living room, brightness, simple placement and quiet operation may matter more.
Portable projectors are useful for occasional viewing, garden film nights or moving between rooms, but check the resolution, battery requirements and speaker quality if you want an all-in-one setup.
Measure the distance between the likely projector position and the screen or wall before comparing models. Throw distance affects how large the image can be and whether the projector will suit a small room.
Short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors can help where space is limited, while standard throw models may be better for ceiling-mounted or rear-of-room installations.
Resolution is important, but it is not the only factor. Brightness, contrast, colour performance, refresh rate and image adjustment tools can all affect how enjoyable the projector is to use.
If you are buying for gaming, look for features that support responsive play, such as suitable refresh rates and low input lag. For films and sport, focus on sharpness, motion handling and how well the projector performs in your room lighting.
Think about whether the projector will sit on furniture, move around the house or be mounted in a fixed position. Keystone correction, lens shift and zoom can make setup easier, but the amount of adjustment varies by model.
If you are planning a permanent installation, compare compatible mounting options and make sure the projector position, power access and cable routes will work before you commit.
A projector is only one part of the big-screen experience. You may also need a suitable screen, external speakers, HDMI cables, a streaming device or replacement lamp depending on the type of projector and how you use it.
Comparing projectors alongside wider sound and vision products can help you build a setup that suits your space rather than choosing a projector in isolation.
