Laura Mercier Powders: Your essential buying guide
Loose powder is often chosen for setting larger areas of the face because it can feel lightweight and easy to diffuse. Pressed powder is compact and less messy, making it handy for touch-ups, travel and targeted shine control during the day.
Translucent powder is designed to set makeup without adding obvious colour, although some formulas can show up on very deep or very fair skin tones. Tinted powder can add light coverage, even out the look of the complexion or better match your foundation shade.
Oily skin types often prefer mattifying or oil-control powders, especially through the T-zone. Look for wording such as matte, shine control or blurring, and apply in light layers to avoid a heavy or cakey finish.
Yes. A sheer pressed or loose powder can be worn alone to reduce shine and create a more polished look. If you want more visible evening-out, choose a tinted powder or powder foundation-style formula rather than a purely translucent setting powder.
Use a small amount at a time and apply only where needed, such as under the eyes, around the nose or across the forehead. A fluffy brush gives a lighter veil, while a sponge or puff deposits more product for extra setting power.
The right powder depends on how you want your base to look and behave throughout the day. Think about whether you need shine control, setting power, added coverage or a soft-focus finish before comparing formulas.
Loose powders are useful when you want an even, diffused layer over foundation or concealer. They can be ideal for setting makeup at home, especially when you prefer a lightweight feel.
Pressed powders are more portable and convenient for quick touch-ups. They suit shoppers who want a compact for handbags, desks or travel without the spill risk of loose powder.
Matte powders help reduce the look of shine and are popular for oily or combination skin. If your skin is dry, look for powders described as smoothing, soft-focus or lightweight rather than very mattifying.
Radiant or illuminating powders can add a subtle glow, but they may emphasise texture if applied heavily. For a natural finish, apply them sparingly to the high points of the face or choose a finely milled formula.
Translucent powders are versatile, but they are not always invisible on every skin tone. If you are concerned about a white cast or dullness, compare tinted powders in shades that sit close to your complexion.
Some powders offer sheer setting only, while others add light to medium coverage. If you want to soften redness or even out your base without liquid foundation, a tinted pressed powder may be more suitable.
A fluffy brush usually gives the most natural, lightly set look. A powder puff or sponge presses product into the skin and can help set areas where makeup creases or moves more easily.
For under-eyes and smaller areas, a tapered brush gives better control. For all-over setting, a larger face brush helps distribute powder evenly without overloading one part of the face.
If you wear foundation or concealer, choose a powder that complements your base rather than changing its shade or finish too much. For minimal makeup days, a lightweight pressed powder can be enough to reduce shine and create a neater look.
When comparing options on ShopSmarty, check the format, finish, shade range, skin-type guidance and size. This makes it easier to shortlist powders that suit how and where you will actually use them.
