Pots: Your essential buying guide
For single portions or small side dishes, a compact pot is usually easier to handle and store. For family meals, soups, pasta, stews or batch cooking, look for a larger capacity with sturdy handles and a well-fitting lid.
Stainless steel is durable and versatile, aluminium is typically lightweight and quick to heat, and cast iron is useful for steady heat retention. Non-stick interiors can help with easy cleaning, while enamelled finishes offer a classic look and can suit slow cooking.
Check the hob compatibility before comparing options. Induction hobs require a magnetic base, while gas, electric and ceramic hobs are compatible with many pot types. A flat, stable base helps with even contact on smooth hob surfaces.
A lid is useful for simmering, retaining heat, reducing splashes and cooking more efficiently. Glass lids make it easier to monitor food, while metal lids can be more robust and often suit higher-heat cooking.
Look for comfortable handles, a secure lid, clear capacity information and a base that feels stable. Pouring rims, internal measuring marks and dishwasher-safe construction can also make everyday cooking and cleaning simpler.

The best pot depends on the meals you cook most often, the hob you use and how much space you have for storage. Comparing the key details can help you avoid buying something too small, too heavy or unsuitable for your cooker.
For quick weeknight cooking, a medium-sized pot with a lid is a practical all-rounder for vegetables, grains, noodles and simple one-pot meals.
If you often make soups, stews or larger portions, compare deeper pots with generous capacity and sturdy side handles. For smaller kitchens, consider whether the pot will fit comfortably in cupboards and on your hob.
Stainless steel pots are a popular choice for durability and everyday versatility. Aluminium pots are generally lighter, while heavier materials can help hold heat more steadily once hot.
Non-stick linings may be useful for lower-fat cooking and easier washing up, but they need suitable utensils and care. Enamelled and polished finishes can affect both appearance and maintenance, so check care guidance before buying.
Always confirm compatibility with your hob, especially if you use induction. The base should sit flat and stable, as this helps with even heating and safer handling.
Some pots are oven-safe, but limits can vary depending on handles, lids and coatings. If you plan to start food on the hob and finish it in the oven, check the stated temperature suitability.
A pot can become heavy once full, so comfortable, secure handles matter. Side handles are useful on larger pots, while long handles can be convenient for smaller everyday cooking.
If storage is tight, compare overall height, lid shape and whether the design nests well with other cookware. A well-fitting lid is worth considering, as it helps with simmering and reduces kitchen splatter.
If a pot is not quite the right shape for your cooking task, it can be worth comparing nearby cookware types such as saucepans, stockpots, casserole dishes or frying pans.
Looking across cookware can help you decide whether you need one versatile pot or a more specialised piece for a particular recipe or cooking method.
