Pitchforks: Your essential buying guide
For compost, look for a strong fork with closely spaced, slightly curved tines that can lift and turn mixed material without too much falling through. A comfortable handle length also helps when working over a compost bay or heap.
Three or four tines are common for loose materials such as straw, mulch and garden waste, while more closely spaced tines can be useful for compost and finer debris. The right choice depends on whether you need easy piercing, better lifting capacity or a balance of both.
Wooden handles feel traditional and can be comfortable to grip, fibreglass handles are often chosen for low maintenance, and metal handles can feel very sturdy. Check the grip, shaft length and joint between the handle and head, as these affect comfort and control.
Not quite. A pitchfork is typically suited to lifting and moving loose materials such as compost, hay, leaves and mulch, while a digging fork is designed for breaking and loosening soil. If you mainly need to dig compacted ground, a spade or digging fork may be more appropriate.
Check the tine material, tine spacing, handle length, grip style and overall weight. It is also worth considering storage space, whether you will use it for light tidying or heavier compost work, and whether the head shape suits the material you handle most.
A good pitchfork should make lifting, turning and moving loose garden materials easier without feeling awkward or tiring. Use ShopSmarty to compare options by design, handle type and intended use before deciding which fork fits your garden tasks.
For compost heaps, leaf mould and mixed garden waste, choose a pitchfork with tines that can grip and turn uneven material. Curved or well-spaced tines can help lift bulky loads, while a narrower head may be easier to control in smaller compost bins.
For mulch, straw, light prunings and general clearing, a wider head can help move more material at once. If you regularly work in tight beds or confined storage areas, a more compact fork may be easier to manoeuvre.
The tines do most of the work, so compare their thickness, spacing and shape carefully. Wider spacing is useful for bulky, loose materials, while closer spacing can be better when lifting smaller fragments of compost or garden debris.
If you expect to use the pitchfork for tougher, damp or compacted material, look for a robust head and a secure connection between the head and handle. Avoid choosing purely by size, as a larger fork can become tiring if it is too heavy for regular use.
Handle length affects posture and leverage. A longer handle can be useful for lifting and turning heaps, while a shorter handle may give more control in raised beds, sheds and tighter corners.
Grip style also matters. Some pitchforks have a straight shaft, while others include a D-grip or shaped end for extra control. If you will use the fork for repeated lifting, prioritise a handle that feels manageable rather than simply choosing the largest option.
A heavier pitchfork may feel reassuringly sturdy, but it can be less comfortable for long sessions. A lighter model may suit frequent tidying, moving dry materials or quick compost turning, provided it still feels strong enough for your usual workload.
Before buying, check the overall length and head width so it will fit in your shed, garage or tool rack. If you keep several garden tools together, a compact or hanging-friendly design may be easier to store safely.
Pitchforks are made for lifting and moving loose material, not for every digging or cutting task. If your main job is breaking soil, edging beds or shifting heavy earth, compare nearby garden tools such as spades, shovels or rakes alongside pitchforks.
Choosing the right tool for each task can make garden work more efficient and reduce strain. Use pitchforks for compost, mulch and debris, then consider other garden tools for soil preparation, pruning, clearing or watering jobs.
