Felix Pets: Your essential buying guide
Start with your pet’s species, breed or size, age, habits and any specific needs. Then compare product dimensions, materials, ease of cleaning, durability and whether the item suits everyday use, travel, feeding, play or rest.
Measure your pet from nose to tail and from floor to shoulder, then allow extra room for stretching, turning and lying comfortably. Check each product’s stated dimensions rather than relying only on labels such as small, medium or large.
Washable beds, blankets, bowls, mats and accessories can make day-to-day care easier, especially for muddy dogs, shedding pets or multi-pet homes. Look for removable covers, wipe-clean surfaces or machine-washable materials where hygiene is a priority.
Useful basics often include feeding bowls, a bed or resting area, grooming tools, toys, waste or litter supplies, a collar or harness where appropriate, and safe travel equipment. Choose items based on the animal’s size, behaviour and living space.
Compare similar items by size, quantity, material and included features, not just the headline price. Multi-packs, larger sizes and sale items can offer better value when they suit your pet’s needs and will be used before they wear out or expire.
Pet products need to suit both the animal and the home they live in. Comparing options carefully can help you choose items that are comfortable, safe, easy to maintain and appropriate for your daily routine.
Think about how your pet eats, sleeps, plays, travels and relaxes. A dog that enjoys long walks may need durable grooming and cleaning accessories, while an indoor cat may benefit more from scratchers, toys and cosy resting spots.
For small animals, birds or other pets, check that products are suitable for the species and enclosure type. Size, ventilation, access and chew-resistant materials can all make a difference.
Sizing can vary between products, so measurements are more reliable than generic size names. Beds, carriers, coats, harnesses and crates should allow comfort without being too loose or restrictive.
If your pet is still growing, consider whether the product will suit them for long enough to be worthwhile. Adjustable designs can be useful for younger animals, but they should still fit securely from the start.
Pet products often need to withstand scratching, chewing, moisture, fur and regular cleaning. Compare materials such as plastic, stainless steel, fabric, rubber and wood based on where and how the item will be used.
For food and water bowls, easy-clean surfaces are useful. For beds and soft accessories, removable covers or washable fabrics can help keep odours and hair under control.
Comfort matters for beds, blankets, carriers and resting areas, but safety is just as important. Avoid items with small loose parts if your pet is likely to chew, and check that fastenings, handles and clips feel appropriate for the intended use.
Also consider how easy the product will be to clean, move and store. A stylish item is less useful if it is difficult to maintain in a busy pet-friendly household.
Good value depends on durability, quantity, suitability and how often the item will be used. Everyday essentials such as bowls, grooming tools, litter accessories and toys may justify sturdier options if they last longer.
Use ShopSmarty to compare pet products and spot sale opportunities, while checking that each option matches your animal’s needs rather than choosing on price alone.
