Start with where the stones will be used, then think about the finish you want and how the pieces will work with the rest of your outdoor space. It also helps to consider shape, thickness and whether you need a more uniform or more natural-looking result.
Yes, paving stones are commonly used for paths, patios and similar outdoor areas. The best choice depends on the scale of the area, the style you want and the practical demands of the space.
Larger stones can help create a simpler, more open feel, while smaller pieces can suit more detailed layouts or tighter spaces. Think about the pattern you want to achieve and how easy the format will be to work with in your project.
It is usually worth considering how the paving stones will sit alongside other materials in the area. Co-ordinating with bricks, edging, accessories and groundwork products can help create a neater overall finish.
Paving stones are chosen mainly for surfacing and outdoor layouts, whereas other masonry products may be better suited to structural or decorative building tasks. If you are unsure, compare the intended use first, then narrow down by style and format.
Choosing paving stones is about balancing appearance, practicality and the scale of the area you want to improve. A clear idea of the finished look will make it easier to compare shapes, sizes and related materials before you choose.
Think about whether you are creating a path, a patio area or a more decorative feature. The best paving stones for the job will depend on how much traffic the area is likely to see and how much visual impact you want from the finished surface.

Paving stones come into play when you want an outdoor surface to feel purposeful and well planned. A more uniform style can give a neat, structured result, while a more varied look can add character to a garden setting.
If you are matching an existing area, focus on tone, shape and overall feel rather than trying to overcomplicate the decision.
Many paving projects are easier to plan when you consider the wider build-up at the same time. Bricks, edging, accessories and groundwork materials can all affect how the final surface looks and functions.
Looking at the full category alongside paving stones can help you narrow down what else you may need for the job.
The most useful comparisons are usually size, shape, finish and how easily the stones will fit your layout. This is especially important if you want a tidy edge, a repeated pattern or a more bespoke arrangement.
If you are working to a specific design, check that the format you choose supports the layout you have in mind before you commit to the rest of the project.
