Sandtex Paints: Your essential buying guide
Start with the surface and the room. Walls, ceilings, woodwork and furniture often need different types of paint, while bathrooms, kitchens and busy hallways usually need a finish that is easier to maintain.
That depends on the look and the practical use of the room. A flatter finish can help hide small surface imperfections, while a sheen finish is often chosen where a wipeable surface is useful.
Often, yes. Woodwork usually benefits from a tougher paint designed for trims, doors and skirting, while wall paint is chosen mainly for coverage and appearance on larger flat areas.
Think about the mood you want to create, the amount of natural light in the room and how the colour sits with your flooring, furniture and fittings. Sampling shades can help before you commit.
Check the surface type, the finish, the room use and whether any preparation is needed first. It is also worth thinking about how many areas you plan to paint, so you choose a suitable product format for the job.
Choosing paint is easier when you break the job down into surface, finish and room type. That way, you can compare options with a clearer idea of what will work best for the look and practical demands of the space.
The same paint will not suit every surface. Walls, ceilings, timber and furniture each bring different needs, so it helps to identify where the paint will be used before you compare options.
If you are painting more than one surface in a room, make a note of each area separately. That makes it easier to keep the finish and product type consistent where needed.
Finish affects both the look and the day-to-day use of the paint. Lower-sheen finishes can create a softer appearance, while more reflective finishes may be better where ease of cleaning matters.
For busy areas, think about how visible marks or scuffs might be over time. For calmer spaces, visual effect may matter more than practicality.
A shade can look very different depending on the light in the room, the size of the space and the colours already in place. That is why it helps to compare shades against the flooring, furniture and fixed fittings.
If you are choosing between several similar colours, consider the atmosphere you want. Warmer tones can feel cosier, while cooler shades often create a fresher look.
A small touch-up, a single feature wall and a full-room refresh can call for different planning. Thinking about the size of the job helps you compare paint in a way that suits the task.
For larger decorating projects, it is useful to keep the chosen finish and shade consistent across the space, especially where rooms connect visually.
