Master Lock Padlocks: Your essential buying guide
For outdoor use, look for a weather-resistant padlock with corrosion-resistant materials, a covered or sealed body, and a shackle suited to the fitting it will secure. A closed-shackle or discus-style padlock can offer less exposed metal for bolt cutters, while a long-shackle padlock may be easier to fit through awkward hasps or chains.
Choose a keyed padlock if you prefer a physical key and want a simple option for sheds, gates or toolboxes. A combination padlock is useful when several trusted people need access without sharing keys, but it is important to choose a model with a clear, resettable code mechanism and to keep the code private.
Check the hasp, chain, locker clasp or gate fitting before buying. The shackle needs to be narrow enough to pass through the fixing, long enough to close properly, and not so loose that it leaves excessive space for tools. The padlock body should also be large enough for the level of security and durability you need.
An open-shackle padlock is versatile and easy to fit, but more of the shackle is exposed. A closed-shackle padlock shields more of the shackle, which can make cutting attacks harder. A discus padlock has a round body and a smaller exposed shackle area, making it a popular choice for storage units, gates and hasps that fit its shape.
Not always. Weight can suggest a more substantial body, but overall security also depends on the shackle material, locking mechanism, weather protection and how well it matches the hasp, chain or fitting. A strong padlock used with a weak hasp may still leave the setup vulnerable.
The right padlock depends on where it will be used, what it will secure and how often it needs to be opened. Comparing the lock body, shackle design, key or combination mechanism and weather protection helps you find a practical balance between convenience and security.
For sheds, gates and outbuildings, prioritise a sturdy body, a shackle that fits snugly through the hasp, and weather resistance for year-round use. For lockers, luggage and gym bags, a smaller keyed or combination padlock may be more convenient.
For chains and storage units, check both the shackle diameter and the clearance inside the shackle. A padlock that is too small may not close; one that is too large may leave unnecessary movement and exposed space.
Open-shackle padlocks are easy to use on a wide range of fittings, making them a flexible everyday choice. Long-shackle versions are useful for awkward or recessed fixings, though the extra exposed metal may be less suitable for higher-risk locations.
Closed-shackle and discus padlocks reduce the amount of exposed shackle, which can be useful for gates, hasps and storage doors. Always check the shape and clearance of your fitting, as these styles can be less flexible than standard open-shackle designs.
Keyed padlocks are straightforward and familiar, especially when one person controls access. If you need multiple users, consider whether spare keys are practical and how they will be managed.
Combination padlocks remove the need for keys and can be convenient for shared access, school lockers or travel. Look for clear dials, a code length that suits the use case, and an easy but secure reset process.
Outdoor padlocks need to cope with moisture, temperature changes and dirt. Weather-resistant casings, covered keyways and corrosion-resistant shackles can help keep the lock operating smoothly for longer.
If the padlock will be exposed on a gate, shed or yard, consider pairing it with a suitable hasp or chain. A secure padlock works best as part of a complete fitting rather than as a standalone purchase.
Measure the shackle diameter, shackle height and internal width against the item you want to secure. Product images can be useful, but dimensions are the key detail when comparing padlocks online.
Also think about everyday handling. A very small padlock may be fiddly with gloves, while a heavy-duty model may be unnecessary for a suitcase or cupboard. The best choice is the one that fits the fitting, the setting and the level of access you need.
