DellDell Monitors: Your essential buying guide
For everyday home or office use, many shoppers prefer a 24-inch or 27-inch monitor as it offers a good balance of desk space and screen area. Larger screens, including 32-inch models and ultrawide monitors, can be useful for multitasking, creative work or immersive gaming, but check your desk depth and viewing distance first.
Full HD is suitable for general browsing, documents and basic home use, especially on smaller screens. QHD offers a sharper image on popular 27-inch monitors and is a strong choice for productivity and gaming. 4K gives the most detail for creative work, media and large screens, but you should make sure your computer or laptop can drive it comfortably.
A 60Hz or 75Hz monitor is usually fine for office tasks, browsing and streaming. Gamers may prefer 120Hz, 144Hz or higher for smoother motion, provided their PC or console can output higher frame rates. For fast-paced games, also consider response time and adaptive sync support.
IPS panels are popular for wide viewing angles and balanced colour, making them useful for office work, creative tasks and general use. VA panels often provide stronger contrast, which can suit films and mixed entertainment. TN panels are less common for everyday shoppers but may appeal where very fast response is the priority.
Check that the monitor has the right inputs for your device, such as HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C. USB-C can be especially useful with compatible laptops because it may carry video and sometimes power or data through one cable, depending on the model. Also check whether you need built-in speakers, a headphone socket or USB hub ports.
Choosing a monitor is about matching the screen to your space, device and daily tasks. Use the sections below to compare the practical features that make the biggest difference before you buy.
Think about how much room you have on your desk and how far you sit from the screen. A 24-inch monitor is a sensible choice for smaller workspaces, while 27-inch models give more room for spreadsheets, browser windows and creative tools.
If you regularly keep several windows open, an ultrawide monitor can replace a dual-screen setup for some users. Curved monitors can feel more immersive on larger or wider screens, but flat monitors remain a straightforward choice for general productivity.
Resolution affects how sharp text, images and video look. Full HD can be enough for everyday computing, but QHD is often a useful step up for a clearer workspace on mid-sized screens.
For photo editing, design, 4K video and detailed visual work, a 4K monitor may be worth comparing. Make sure your computer, laptop or games console supports the resolution and refresh rate you want through the available ports.
For general use, refresh rate is less critical than size, resolution and ergonomics. For gaming, a higher refresh rate can make movement look smoother, especially in fast action titles.
Response time, adaptive sync support and the connection standard can all affect the gaming experience. Check the monitor specification alongside your graphics card or console capabilities so you do not pay for features your setup cannot use.
A monitor used for long sessions should be comfortable to position. Look for height adjustment, tilt, swivel and pivot options if you want more control over posture and viewing angle.
If the stand is basic, check whether the monitor supports VESA mounting so you can use a compatible monitor arm. Also consider screen finish: an anti-glare coating can help in bright rooms, while glossy finishes may show more reflections.
Before comparing offers, list the devices you want to connect. HDMI is common for laptops, desktops and consoles, while DisplayPort is widely used for PC monitors, particularly for higher refresh rates.
USB-C can be convenient for compatible laptops, but features vary by monitor. Some USB-C monitors support video only, while others may include power delivery or a USB hub, so check the details rather than assuming every USB-C port works the same way.
