Hotpoint Microwave Ovens: Your essential buying guide
A solo microwave is best for straightforward reheating, defrosting and simple cooking. A grill microwave adds browning and crisping for foods such as toasties or toppings. A combination microwave can use microwave energy with convection-style heating, making it more versatile for baking, roasting and cooking larger dishes.
Smaller microwaves of around 20 litres can suit single-person households, flats and limited worktop space. Larger capacities are useful if you regularly heat dinner plates, cook family portions or use bigger bowls and casserole dishes. Always check the internal dimensions and turntable size, not just the litre capacity.
Yes. Higher wattage can heat food more quickly, while lower wattage models may take longer. Many cooking instructions are based on common microwave power levels, so choosing a model with clear power settings can make it easier to follow packet guidance and adjust cooking times.
Freestanding microwaves sit on a worktop and are usually easier to reposition, making them a practical choice for most kitchens. Built-in microwave ovens are designed to fit into cabinetry for a neater integrated look, but you should check the required dimensions, ventilation guidance and installation requirements carefully.
Useful features to compare include auto-defrost programmes, sensor cooking, quick-start buttons, child locks, easy-clean interiors, digital timers and removable turntables. If you cook more than you simply reheat, look for grill or combination functions and accessories such as racks or crisp plates.
Microwave ovens vary from simple, space-saving models to multifunction appliances that can grill, bake and roast. The right choice depends on how much room you have, what you cook most often and whether you want a basic reheating appliance or a more flexible cooking tool.
Solo microwaves are the simplest option and are ideal for reheating leftovers, warming drinks, steaming vegetables and defrosting frozen food. They are often a good fit for everyday convenience where extra oven-style functions are not needed.
Grill microwaves add a heating element, helping you brown or crisp the surface of food. Combination microwaves go further by combining microwave cooking with convection-style heat, which can be useful if you want one appliance to handle a wider range of meals.
Measure your available worktop or cabinet space before comparing models, and allow room for safe ventilation according to the product guidance. A compact microwave may be easier to place in a smaller kitchen, while a larger model can be more practical for family cooking.
Capacity in litres is a helpful starting point, but the usable interior matters too. Check whether your usual plates, bowls and microwave-safe containers will fit, especially if you cook ready meals, soups or larger portions.
Microwave power affects cooking speed, so compare wattage alongside the number of power levels. Multiple power settings can give you better control when softening butter, defrosting meat or reheating food without drying it out.
Auto programmes can make common tasks simpler, but they are most useful when they match how you actually cook. Look for controls you will find easy to use, whether that is a simple dial layout, push buttons or a digital touch panel.
Features such as a quick-start function, kitchen timer, child lock and easy-clean lining can make a microwave more convenient to live with. A clear display and interior light are useful when checking progress during cooking.
If you choose a grill or combination microwave, compare the included accessories and cleaning requirements. Racks, trays and crisping plates can add versatility, but they also need storage and care.
Microwave ovens are available in finishes such as white, black, silver and stainless steel, so it is worth considering how the appliance will look alongside your kettle, toaster and larger kitchen appliances.
Door style, handle design and control placement can also affect day-to-day use. If the microwave will sit under wall cupboards or in a corner, check that the door can open comfortably.
