Memory Foam Mattresses: Your essential buying guide
Start with the mattress size, firmness rating, overall depth and the type of foam construction. Also check whether the mattress has breathable cover materials, zoned support, removable covers or a layered design, as these details can affect comfort and everyday practicality.
They can suit a range of sleeping positions, but the best choice depends on firmness and support. Side sleepers often compare softer to medium options for cushioning, while back and front sleepers may prefer a firmer feel that helps keep the body more evenly supported.
Consider your body weight, preferred sleeping position and whether you like to feel more cushioned or more supported. If you share a bed, compare models that balance comfort for both sleepers rather than choosing purely by one person’s preference.
Some shoppers find dense foam can feel warmer than more open spring constructions. If temperature is a concern, compare memory foam mattresses with breathable covers, ventilation features or foam layers designed to improve airflow.
Memory foam mattresses are commonly listed in UK sizes such as single, small double, double, king and super king, with some ranges also offering European sizing. Always match the listed mattress dimensions to your bed frame, especially if you are replacing an older mattress.
A memory foam mattress can be a good fit when you want a cushioned, body-contouring feel, but the right model depends on more than the material alone. Use the points below to compare practical features before choosing a deal.
Check the exact dimensions of the memory foam mattress against your existing bed frame, divan base or storage bed. UK single, double, king and super king sizes can vary from European sizes, so do not rely on the name alone.
If you are upgrading from a smaller mattress, allow enough bedroom space for walking room, bedside furniture and drawers to open comfortably.
Memory foam mattresses can feel very different depending on foam density, layer depth and the support core beneath the comfort layer. A softer surface may feel more cushioning, while a firmer model can provide a steadier sleeping surface.
Look for product details that explain the firmness level and construction rather than choosing by thickness alone. A deeper mattress is not automatically the most suitable option for every sleeper.
If you tend to sleep warm, compare memory foam mattresses with breathable covers, airflow channels or foam layers designed to reduce heat build-up. These features are especially worth checking if the mattress will be used year-round.
Bedding can also affect how warm a memory foam mattress feels, so consider mattress protectors, duvets and sheets alongside the mattress itself.
For couples, compare how each memory foam mattress handles movement, edge support and firmness preferences. A mattress that feels comfortable to one sleeper may not be ideal for another, particularly where body weights or sleep positions differ.
If you want a foam feel with added spring structure, it may also be worth comparing nearby mattress types such as pocket memory foam or pocket sprung mattresses before deciding.
When comparing memory foam mattress offers, read the specification carefully so you know what is included. Useful details include mattress depth, cover type, care instructions, guarantee information and whether the mattress is supplied rolled or flat.
ShopSmarty helps you compare sale listings and narrow down suitable memory foam mattresses, but final checks should always be made against the retailer’s product information before purchase.
