Vicks Medicines: Your essential buying guide
Start by matching the medicine to the specific symptom you want to treat, such as pain, blocked nose, heartburn or hay fever. Check the active ingredient, age suitability, dosage instructions and warnings, and ask a pharmacist, GP or other qualified healthcare professional if you are unsure.
Compare the active ingredient, strength, format, quantity, age range and any usage restrictions rather than looking at the brand alone. It is also worth checking whether the product is suitable alongside any other medicines or health conditions.
Some branded and own-label medicines may contain the same active ingredient and strength, but they can differ in format, flavour, added ingredients, pack size and suitability warnings. Always read the product information carefully before choosing.
Some medicines can interact or duplicate the same active ingredient, such as certain cold remedies and painkillers. Read each label carefully and speak to a pharmacist or doctor before combining treatments, especially for children, pregnancy, long-term conditions or regular medication.
Common formats include tablets, capsules, liquids, soluble tablets, sprays, drops, creams, gels, sachets and lozenges. The best format depends on the condition being treated, the user’s age, how quickly and easily it can be taken, and any swallowing or taste preferences.
Choosing medicines is about more than finding a familiar name. Use ShopSmarty to compare key product details, then make sure the medicine is appropriate for the person taking it and the symptoms being treated.
Medicines are often grouped by the symptoms they help manage, such as pain, fever, coughs, colds, allergies, indigestion or skin irritation. Within each group, products may use different active ingredients or combinations, so check what the medicine actually contains.
Combination products can be convenient, but they may not be necessary if you only have one symptom. They can also increase the risk of accidentally taking the same active ingredient twice.
Strength and dosage vary by medicine type and format. Always read the label and patient information leaflet, particularly when buying for children, older adults or anyone with an existing medical condition.
Look out for clear age ranges, maximum daily doses and how often the medicine can be taken. If the instructions are unclear or symptoms persist, seek advice from a pharmacist or GP.
Tablets and capsules are compact and simple to store, while liquids, sachets, sprays, drops, creams and gels can be more suitable for specific symptoms or people who find tablets difficult to swallow.
Pack size matters too. A small pack may suit occasional use, while larger packs can be practical for regular household essentials, provided they are used safely and within their expiry date.
Medicines can have restrictions relating to pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, alcohol, driving, long-term conditions and other medication. Do not rely on the product name alone; check the warnings and ingredients every time.
If you take prescription medicine or have conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, liver problems or kidney problems, ask a healthcare professional before choosing an over-the-counter medicine.
Some shoppers compare medicines alongside broader health items such as monitoring devices, first aid supplies or support products. If your symptoms are ongoing, severe or unusual, medicine may not be the only thing to consider and professional advice may be needed.
Use the wider Health category when you want to browse related healthcare products beyond medicines.
