Anastasia Beverly Hills Lipsticks: Your essential buying guide
Start with the effect you want. Matte lipsticks give a more defined, modern look, satin formulas feel softer and more comfortable, and glossy finishes add shine and a fuller-looking effect. If you wear lipstick for long stretches, consider how the finish feels as well as how it looks.
Neutral tones are often the most versatile for daily wear. Shades that are close to your natural lip colour, soft pinks, rosy nudes and muted berry tones can work well for quick, low-effort makeup looks. Choosing a shade that suits your skin tone can also make it easier to wear regularly.
For better staying power, start with smooth, dry lips and apply a lip liner if you want extra definition. Blotting between layers can help remove excess product, and a small amount of powder through a tissue can reduce transfer. Reapplying after meals is often necessary, especially with creamier formulas.
If your lips feel dry, look for formulas that feel comfortable and non-drying. Cream, satin and balm-like lipsticks are often a better starting point than very matte styles. It also helps to exfoliate gently and apply a lip balm before makeup, leaving time for it to absorb.
Yes, lipstick works well on its own or layered with other lip products. Lip liner can help define the edges and shape the lips, while gloss can add shine or change the finish. Layering can also let you adjust the colour intensity or make a lipstick feel more comfortable.
Lipstick is one of the simplest ways to change up a makeup look, whether you want a subtle everyday shade or a bolder statement colour. On ShopSmarty, this category is designed to help you compare lipstick options by finish, feel and colour so you can narrow down what suits your routine. Thinking about how you like your makeup to look and wear throughout the day makes it much easier to choose the right product.
The finish affects both the look and the feel of a lipstick. Matte finishes create a more polished, defined look, while satin formulas usually offer a softer appearance with a little more slip. Glossy and creamy textures can feel easier to wear if you prefer a more forgiving, comfortable finish.
If you like quick application and minimal fuss, a smoother formula may suit you best. If you want more structure and a stronger colour impact, a firmer matte style may be the better choice.
The most useful lipstick shade is often the one you will wear often. Everyday staples tend to include nudes, soft pinks, rose tones and muted berries because they are easy to pair with different outfits and makeup styles.
If you want a statement lip, deeper reds, plums and brighter colours can add contrast and make a simple look feel more dressed up. It can help to think about whether you want a shade for daily wear, special occasions or both.
Comfort matters if you wear lipstick for long periods. Some formulas feel light and balmy, while others may sit more firmly on the lips. If your lips tend to feel dry, a more hydrating texture may be easier to wear through the day.
It can also help to prepare your lips before application. Smooth lips usually make lipstick look more even, and a little lip balm can improve the feel of many formulas.
Lip liner can help shape the lips, stop colour from bleeding and make application feel more precise. It is especially useful if you want a neater outline or a slightly fuller-looking shape.
Gloss can change the final effect of a lipstick without needing to switch colours. It is a simple way to add shine, soften a matte finish or create a more layered look.
A practical lipstick collection does not need to be large. Many shoppers find it helpful to have one or two everyday shades, plus a stronger colour for when they want more impact.
Choosing a mix of finishes can also make your collection more flexible. For example, a comfortable everyday formula, a more defined matte option and a gloss or balm-style product can cover most makeup needs.
