Light Strips: Your essential buying guide
Start with the space you want to light, where the strip will sit, and how you want it to look when switched on and off. Check the length needed, whether you want a subtle glow or brighter accent lighting, and whether the strip is suitable for the surface or location you have in mind.
Measure the area you want to cover first, then choose a strip that fits the route you plan to follow. It is usually better to allow a little flexibility than to cut it too short, especially if you want to go around corners, under cabinets, or behind furniture.
Useful features depend on how you plan to use it. Some shoppers look for adjustable brightness, colour options, simple controls, or adhesive backing for easier fitting. If you want a more tailored result, check whether the strip can be cut to size or linked with other sections.
Light strips are often used to add atmosphere in bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, shelving, desks, and media areas. They can help highlight edges, add accent lighting, or create a softer finish in places where you want light without a bulky fitting.
Think about the purpose of the lighting, the finish you want, and how easy the strip will be to install in that room. Kitchens may need a neat fit under units, while bedrooms or living spaces may focus more on mood and decorative effect. Matching the strip to the room’s layout helps you get a cleaner result.
Light strips are a simple way to add accent lighting, shape the feel of a room, and make unused spaces look more purposeful. When comparing options, focus on where the strip will go, how much light you want, and whether the style suits the area you are updating.
Start by looking at the exact area you want to light. A strip for the back of a TV unit, under kitchen cabinets, or along a shelf edge will have different needs from one used to brighten a feature wall.
For a tidy finish, consider the route the strip needs to follow and whether it will need to turn corners or fit into narrower spaces. A good match between the strip and the space makes the final result look more intentional.
Some shoppers want a soft decorative glow, while others prefer lighting that stands out more clearly. Before buying, decide whether the strip is mainly for atmosphere, task lighting, or to highlight a particular area.
Colour choice and brightness can affect the whole feel of a room. A more subtle effect may suit relaxing spaces, while a stronger output can work better where you want the strip to be noticed more easily.
Light strips can be easier to buy for than to install, so it helps to think ahead about the surface and fixing method. Adhesive backing may suit straightforward indoor use, while a more secure setup can be helpful where the strip needs extra support.
If you want a custom length, check whether the strip can be trimmed or joined. That gives you more control over the fit and helps avoid wasted material or awkward gaps.
Different rooms call for different buying priorities. In a bedroom, a softer decorative strip may be more useful than a bright one. In a kitchen or workspace, neat placement and practical illumination can matter more.
If you are using strips in a living area, consider how they will look when the room is both lit and unlit. The best choice should work as part of the room’s design rather than feeling added on as an afterthought.
Think about how you want to use the strip day to day. Simple controls may be enough for some homes, while others may prefer more flexibility over brightness or colour.
Ease of use matters if the strip is somewhere you will switch on regularly. A straightforward setup can make the lighting more convenient, especially in places you want to adjust often.
