Tiffen Lens Filters: Your essential buying guide
Choose a filter that matches your lens thread diameter, usually shown on the lens barrel or inside the lens cap with the Ø symbol, such as Ø58mm or Ø77mm. The filter size is not the same as the lens focal length, so check the thread size before comparing options.
It depends on what you want the filter to do. UV or clear filters are often used for front-element protection, circular polarisers help manage glare and reflections, and neutral density filters reduce the amount of light entering the lens for slower shutter speeds or wider apertures.
Most screw-in filters fit lenses with a matching front filter thread, but some lenses have unusual front elements, built-in hoods or no standard thread. Always check the lens filter diameter and any manufacturer compatibility notes before choosing.
Some filters can be stacked, but doing so may increase the risk of vignetting, reflections or reduced image quality, especially on wide-angle lenses. If you need multiple effects, compare slim-frame filters or consider whether one high-quality filter will do the job.
A fixed ND filter reduces light by a set amount, such as 3-stop or 6-stop. A variable ND filter lets you adjust the strength within a range, which can be useful for changing light conditions, but it is still important to check size, density range and suitability for your lens.
Lens filters can be a practical addition to a camera kit, whether you are shooting landscapes, video, portraits, travel or everyday scenes. The right choice depends on your lens size, the effect you need and how often you plan to use it.
The most important specification is the filter thread diameter. Look for the Ø symbol on the lens, lens cap or product manual, then compare filters in the same millimetre size.
If you use several lenses with different thread sizes, you may want to compare individual filters for each lens or look into step-up rings separately. Avoid assuming that two lenses from the same camera system use the same filter size.
A circular polarising filter is useful when you want to reduce reflections from glass, water or shiny surfaces, and it can also deepen the look of blue skies when used at suitable angles to the sun.
Neutral density filters are designed to cut light, making them helpful for long exposures, wider apertures in bright conditions or smoother-looking motion in video. UV and clear filters are commonly chosen when the main aim is to add a protective layer to the front of a lens.
Filter frame thickness matters, particularly with wide-angle lenses. A bulky filter can sometimes appear in the corners of the image, creating darkened edges known as vignetting.
Slim-frame filters may be worth comparing if you shoot wide landscapes, interiors or architecture. Also check whether the filter has front threads if you plan to attach a lens cap or another accessory.
Filter coatings can affect resistance to flare, reflections, fingerprints and water marks. When comparing lens filters, look at the coating description alongside the filter type and size rather than choosing by size alone.
For regular outdoor use, also consider how easy the filter is to clean, whether the ring is textured for grip and whether a storage case is included.
Landscape photographers may prioritise polarisers and ND filters, while video creators often compare variable ND options for flexible exposure control. Travel and everyday shooters may prefer a simple protective filter that can stay on the lens.
ShopSmarty helps you browse lens filter options within the wider photography category, so you can narrow the choice by the filter features that genuinely match how you shoot.
