VidaxlvidaXL Kitchen Units: Your essential buying guide
You can compare core kitchen units such as base cabinets, upper cabinets, tall cabinets, kitchen islands, drawers and shelves, plus replacement doors and drawer fronts. Compact options such as mini kitchens and one-wall kitchens are also useful for smaller spaces, studios, utility rooms or simple kitchenette layouts.
Base cabinets sit beneath worktops and usually provide the main storage and appliance housing. Wall or upper cabinets make use of vertical space above the worktop, while tall cabinets are better for pantry storage, integrated appliances or full-height organisation. Most fitted kitchens use a combination of all three.
If the cabinet carcasses are still suitable and the layout works, replacing doors and drawer fronts can refresh the look without changing every unit. If the units are damaged, poorly configured or you need a new layout, comparing complete cabinets and storage components may be more appropriate.
Measure the wall lengths, ceiling height, appliance gaps, plumbing positions, corners, door swings and any obstructions such as radiators or windows. For replacement units or fronts, also check existing cabinet widths, depths, hinge positions and drawer configurations.
Yes. Mini kitchens and one-wall kitchens are more layout-led solutions, often designed to group essential cooking, washing and storage functions in a compact footprint. Standard kitchen units are usually selected individually and combined to create a tailored run or full room layout.
Kitchen units form the structure of a practical kitchen, so it is worth comparing both the visible finish and the storage layout behind it. Use this guide to decide which unit types suit your room, how to think about layout, and when related categories may help narrow your search.
Before comparing finishes, decide how your kitchen needs to work. A straight run, L-shape, galley, island layout or compact kitchenette will all affect which units you need and where they should sit.
For a simple run along one wall, compare unit widths carefully so the combination fits the available space. For larger layouts, think about zones for cooking, washing, food storage and preparation so cabinets, drawers and shelves support daily use.
Base cabinets usually do the heavy lifting in a kitchen, supporting worktops and holding pots, pans, appliances or sink areas. Upper cabinets add storage above the worktop without taking up floor space.
Tall cabinets are useful where you need full-height storage, a pantry-style area or a vertical housing unit. Comparing these cabinet types together helps you balance accessible storage with open worktop space.
The inside of each unit matters as much as the outside. Deep drawers can make cookware easier to reach, while shelves may suit dry goods, crockery or occasional-use items.
When comparing kitchen units, check how the internal arrangement matches what you own. A good mix of drawer packs, shelving and cabinet space can reduce clutter and make everyday cooking smoother.
If your layout already works, new doors and drawer fronts can change the style of the kitchen without necessarily changing every cabinet. Compare colours, profiles, handle options and finishes against your worktops, flooring and wall colour.
For replacement fronts, accuracy is important. Match the existing cabinet sizes and check hinge or drawer-front compatibility before committing to a style.
A kitchen island can add preparation space, storage and a more social layout where the room size allows. Compare island units by footprint, storage format, seating potential and how much walking space remains around the unit.
For smaller rooms, an island may not be the best use of space, so a well-planned run of base and upper cabinets may be more practical.
Kitchen units need to work as a system. Compare height, width, depth, plinth requirements, door style and cabinet configuration so the pieces sit neatly together.
Also consider how the units will interact with appliances, sinks, taps, worktops and ventilation. Careful measuring and a clear layout plan will make it easier to shortlist suitable options on ShopSmarty.
