Microsoft Keyboards: Your essential buying guide
Choose a wired keyboard if you want a simple, always-connected setup with no battery management. A wireless keyboard is better if you prefer a cleaner desk, use multiple devices or want more flexibility in where you type.
A full-size keyboard includes a number pad, which is useful for spreadsheets and data entry. Tenkeyless and compact keyboards save desk space and can be more comfortable if you want your mouse closer to your typing position.
Mechanical keyboards can offer a more defined key feel, with switch types that vary from quiet and smooth to clicky and tactile. They are popular for gaming and long typing sessions, but the right choice depends on noise preference, key feel and budget.
Look for a responsive layout, comfortable key spacing, suitable switch feel, anti-ghosting or rollover features where listed, and any shortcut or lighting options you will actually use. Compact gaming keyboards may also free up more mouse space.
Consider key travel, wrist position, layout size and whether you need a number pad. Ergonomic or low-profile keyboards may help create a more comfortable typing posture, especially when paired with a suitable desk height and monitor position.
A keyboard shapes how your computer feels every day, whether you are writing documents, entering figures, gaming or switching between devices. Use ShopSmarty to compare keyboard styles and features so you can narrow the choice before you buy.
Full-size keyboards include the main keys, function row, navigation cluster and number pad, making them practical for office work, finance tasks and general desktop use.
Tenkeyless and compact keyboards remove some sections to save space. They can be a good fit for smaller desks, portable setups or anyone who wants more room for a mouse.
Membrane and scissor-switch keyboards often suit quieter shared spaces and everyday typing. Mechanical keyboards offer more distinct switch options, so it is worth checking whether the keys are described as linear, tactile or clicky.
If noise matters, look for quieter switch descriptions, low-profile designs or office-focused models. If feedback matters more, a keyboard with firmer or more tactile keys may feel more satisfying.
USB keyboards are straightforward for desktops and fixed workstations. Wireless keyboards can reduce cable clutter and may suit laptops, tablets or multi-device workspaces.
For wireless models, check the connection type, such as Bluetooth or a USB receiver, and consider how the keyboard is powered. Rechargeable and battery-powered designs each have their own convenience.
Backlighting can help in dim rooms, while dedicated media keys, shortcut buttons and programmable keys can make daily tasks quicker. For gaming, pay attention to response-focused features listed by the manufacturer.
Compatibility is also important. Check whether the keyboard layout, operating system support and connection options suit your computer before comparing deals.
