Wickes Interior Doors: Your essential buying guide
Measure the height, width and thickness of your existing door or the door frame opening, then compare those measurements with the listed door size. Allow for trimming only if the product specification says it can be trimmed, as some engineered or finished doors have limits.
Hollow core doors are usually lighter and suited to general internal use, while solid or solid-core doors tend to feel heavier and may offer a more substantial feel. Engineered doors are made with a constructed core and outer finish, giving a stable option in a range of styles.
Glazed interior doors help borrowed light move between rooms, which can be useful for hallways, kitchens and living areas. Solid doors are often preferred for bedrooms, bathrooms and spaces where privacy is more important.
Many unfinished or primed interior doors are designed to be painted, while some timber-veneer doors may be suitable for staining or varnishing. Always check the finish and care instructions before buying, especially if the door is pre-finished.
You may need hinges, handles, latches, locks, a suitable frame or lining, and finishing products such as paint or varnish. Check whether the door is supplied alone or as part of a set, as most internal doors are bought separately from hardware.
Interior doors affect how a room looks, feels and functions. The right choice depends on the opening size, privacy needs, style of décor, finish preference and whether the door will be fitted as a like-for-like replacement or as part of a wider DIY project.
For bedrooms and bathrooms, privacy is usually the main priority, so solid or panelled interior doors are a common choice. For living rooms, kitchens and hallways, glazed internal doors can help brighten connected spaces without fully opening up the layout.
If the room has limited swing space, a standard hinged interior door may not be the most practical option. In that case, compare nearby door formats such as sliding or folding doors separately, as they work differently from conventional internal doors.
Measure carefully before focusing on colour or design. Check the door height, width and thickness, and note whether the existing door opens left or right. If you are replacing an old door, measuring the current door can be simpler than measuring the frame alone.
Some interior doors can be trimmed to fit, but trimming allowances vary. This is especially important for pre-finished, veneered, glazed or engineered doors, where cutting too much may affect the structure or finish.
Primed interior doors are a practical choice if you want to paint them in a specific colour. Pre-finished doors can save time if you want a ready-to-fit look, while unfinished timber or veneer options offer more flexibility for staining or varnishing.
Consider how durable the surface needs to be. High-traffic areas such as hallways and family living spaces may benefit from a finish that is easier to maintain, while quieter rooms may allow more focus on decorative style.
Glazed interior doors can make darker areas feel more open by allowing light to pass between rooms. They are often suited to dining rooms, lounges, kitchens and home offices where full privacy is less important.
For bathrooms, bedrooms and utility spaces, a solid door or obscure glazing may be more appropriate. Always consider how the room will be used day to day before choosing clear glass.
Interior doors are often sold without handles, hinges and latches, so check what is included before comparing options. Matching hardware can make a big difference to the finished look, particularly if you are replacing several doors in the same hallway.
If fitting the door yourself, make sure you have suitable tools and finishing materials. For wider home improvement work, it can also help to compare related DIY products alongside the door so the project is planned as a whole.
