Ink: Your essential buying guide
Start with your printer model number and match it against the cartridge or bottle specification shown by the printer manufacturer. Check whether your printer uses ink cartridges or refill bottles, then confirm the colour set required, such as black only or individual colour cartridges. It is also worth checking the cartridge code printed on your current ink to avoid ordering the wrong type.
Dye-based ink is usually chosen for bright colour output and everyday documents, while pigment-based ink is often preferred for sharper text and better resistance to smudging on suitable paper. The best option depends on how you print most often and whether your printer is designed for one type in particular. Always follow the ink type recommended for your printer model.
Standard ink can suit occasional printing, while high-yield ink is designed to print more pages before needing replacement. If you print regularly, high-yield options may help reduce how often you replace cartridges. If you print only now and then, standard ink may be more practical for your needs and budget.
Many inkjet printers use separate black and colour cartridges so they can print documents, photos and mixed-colour graphics accurately. Some printers will not print certain tasks if one cartridge is empty, even if the others still contain ink. Checking your printer’s cartridge layout before buying can help you replace the right one.
Keep spare cartridges in their sealed packaging until needed and store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid leaving them in very hot or damp areas, as this may affect performance. It is also sensible to note the cartridge codes so you can identify them quickly when it is time to replace them.

Choosing the right ink is mainly about matching your printer model, selecting the correct cartridge type and deciding how much you print. A careful check before you buy can help you avoid compatibility issues and keep your printer ready for everyday use, coursework, photos or home office printing.
The first step is to find the exact printer model name or number, usually shown on the front, top or back of the machine. That model details which ink it accepts and whether it uses one cartridge, multiple colour cartridges or refill bottles.
If you already have used cartridges, the code printed on them can help you identify the replacement more quickly. This is especially useful when several cartridges look similar but are not interchangeable.
Ink products are not universal, so the format matters as much as the colour. Some printers use standard cartridges, others use high-yield cartridges, and some are designed for bottled ink systems.
Think about how often you print. If you print frequently, a higher-capacity option may be more convenient. If you print less often, a standard cartridge may be enough for occasional jobs.
Many printers need a separate black cartridge alongside one or more colour cartridges. Others use individual cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges, which can be replaced one colour at a time when needed.
Before ordering, look at which colours are running low and whether your printer needs a full set or just a single replacement. This helps you buy only what you actually need.
Different ink types can suit different tasks. If you mainly print text-heavy documents, look for ink that supports crisp, clean output on your usual paper. If you print images or colour documents, the ink type and paper you use together can affect the final result.
Always follow the guidance for your specific printer, as using the wrong ink type can affect performance and print quality.
If you are buying ink as part of a broader printer consumables shop, it can help to review Ink & Toners alongside Ink so you can compare the format that best suits your printer. This is useful if you are still confirming whether your device takes ink cartridges, toners or another consumable type.
For broader computer setup needs, Peripherals and Computing may also help you organise your shopping, but only after you have confirmed the exact ink your printer requires.
